Meet David Muentes — Atlantic Edge’s Marathon Diving Machine

If you’ve spent any time around Atlantic Edge over the last five years, chances are you’ve met David Muentes — instructor, motivator, fitness fanatic, and all-around good guy who somehow always has energy left in the tank.

David brings a lifetime of discipline and adventure to the Atlantic Edge crew after retiring from both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. Whether he’s teaching new divers underwater or crushing marathon miles on land, David is always pushing himself — and encouraging everyone around him to do the same.

Originally from Chicago, David’s diving story began on the chilly waters of California’s Monterey Bay, where he first fell in love with diving alongside playful seals and curious sea otters. From there, diving became more than a hobby — it became part of who he is.

These days, David’s favorite dive destination is the crystal-clear waters of Cozumel, where the warm currents and incredible reefs keep calling him back for more adventures.

When he’s not underwater or logging training miles for another marathon, David is busy being a proud dad to five kids and enjoying dive adventures with his wife Leah, who is also an avid diver and part of the Atlantic Edge diving family.

Around the shop, David is known for his positive attitude, calm leadership, and ability to make everyone feel welcome — whether it’s your first dive or your hundredth. From military service to marathon finish lines to helping divers build confidence underwater, David proves that adventure never stops. You can join David in Cozumel this coming January 2027.

Why Learn to Dive with Atlantic Edge Scuba

A letter from John Harman, Owner

When people ask me why they should learn to dive with Atlantic Edge, my answer is always the same — because we genuinely enjoy helping people discover something that can truly change their lives.

Scuba diving has a way of bringing people together, building confidence, and creating experiences you simply can’t find anywhere else. I’ve been fortunate to watch that happen for more than 30 years.

I’ve seen shy students become confident leaders. I’ve seen families discover a passion they can share together for years. I’ve seen people stressed from everyday life take their very first breath underwater and come back to the surface smiling in a way they haven’t in a long time.

At Atlantic Edge, we never wanted to be “just another dive shop.”
We wanted to build a community.

What makes me most proud isn’t our certifications, our trips, or even the incredible places we dive. It’s our staff.

Our instructors, divemasters, and team members genuinely love diving — and they love sharing it with others. They are patient, encouraging, experienced, and most importantly, they care about every student’s success and comfort level. Whether you’re nervous about your first pool session or dreaming about becoming a professional diver one day, our team is there to support you every step of the way.

We believe learning to dive should be fun, exciting, and welcoming.

You’ll laugh during classes.
You’ll make new friends.
You’ll hear stories from dive trips and adventures.
And before long, you’ll realize you’re part of something bigger than a certification card.

One of my favorite things is watching new divers continue diving after class ends — joining trips, exploring wrecks, visiting the National Aquarium with us, traveling the world, or simply enjoying local diving with friends they met here at the shop.

That’s what Atlantic Edge is really about.

We love what we do because diving has given us so much over the years: friendships, adventures, confidence, and unforgettable memories. Sharing that experience with new divers is something we never take for granted.
