What is Trimix? | IANTD

If you’re starting your diving journey, you’ve probably heard the term Trimix and thought… what is that exactly?

Trimix is a breathing gas made of three components: oxygen, nitrogen, and helium.

But why add helium?

As divers go deeper, nitrogen can cause narcosis (that “drunk feeling” underwater), and oxygen can become toxic at high pressures. That’s where Trimix comes in.

By adding helium to the mix:
• It reduces narcosis, keeping your mind clear
• It lowers oxygen exposure, increasing safety at depth
• It allows divers to explore deeper environments more safely

Trimix is commonly used in technical diving, especially for deep dives, wrecks, and caves where precision and awareness are critical.

⚠️ Important: Trimix diving requires proper training, planning, and discipline. It’s not something to try without certification and guidance.

Every gas has a purpose. Every dive has a plan.

What a fantastic weekend of training!
Congratulations to IANTD’s newest Cave DPV pilots, Andrew and Rachael.

They handled six hours of lecture and two demanding days of diving, covering a combined 11,000 feet of cave, all while tackling failures, mastering new skills, crunching the numbers, and reshaping how they approach cave exploration.

Well done—now it’s time to put those skills to work and go see some new cave.
