Ever wonder why the non-volley zone is called “The Kitchen”?
The term actually comes from shuffleboard! In shuffleboard, the "kitchen" is an area behind the scoring zones where points are deducted if a disk lands there—a place you definitely don't want to be. Early pickleball creators borrowed the nickname for their 7-foot dead zone near the net, where smashing a ball out of the air is strictly illegal!
