Last night was a special night at the dojo. After a night of sparring, we had a promotion!

Kodi made his way from Blue Belt to Green Belt last night, something he has been working towards for a while.

I am very proud of all the effort this young man puts into his training, and I hope to one day tie a Shodan rank around his waist.

Keep up the amazing work, Kodi! šŸ„‹

I'm sorry to have to inform everyone that class is cancelled tonight on account of Sensei Tim being feverish and bedridden out of no where... Sparring will take place on Monday, 8/31.

See you all Wednesday, hopefully!

We sparred on Monday Night, and practiced Kata on Wednesday Night at the dojo.

Kata is a divisive training method in martial arts these days. Many modern practitioners see Kata as useless, however there is much to be learned by diving into kata. Kata teaches structure, balance and coordination on its most basic level, but as Kata is explored deeper, it can become an exercise of the mind. This is where Bunkai, or breaking down, comes into play, looking at a Kata and understanding what is going on in the movements and strikes. This leads to Oyo, or the practical application of Kata.

Our goal at Empty Hands Martial Arts is to understand Kata on all levels to make it the most beneficial training aid it can be. Here are a few pictures from Wednesday's kata class.

Can anyone guess the Kata practiced that night?

What a turn out on Saturday for our Youth and Women's Back to School Self-Defense Class! Many young ladies came out for this class, many getting ready for their first year of college. There were a few young men as well who came to the class.

Sensei Tim's approach to Self-Defense is KIS, Keep it Simple! (He omits the last S, or Stupid, because that's just rude.) The idea was simple tactics and techniques that do not require thinking on the fly. Having the right mindset and being confident in yourself is also key.

Big thank you to everyone who attended this event, and a big thank you to those who helped out, including Gabe, David, Kodi, Ioana and Charlie as my assistants, and my wife, Kristyn, for helping with photos and corralling a few little ones during the class.

The next self-defense based class is scheduled for September 5/ A flyer will be coming out soon!

We've been practicing kicks at the dojo over the past week. In these photos, students were kicking more than one pad before putting their foot back on the mat. It was fun for them, and a great lesson on balance and kick chambering.

Here are the recent happenings at the dojo.

We have been working hard on throwing techniques lately. Several classes have been spent studying off balancing and body positioning for throws, along with full on randori sessions. Everyone is doing great!

We have also had our first promotion in the new dojo: Jimmy was promoted to Yellow Belt after a night of sparring his classmates on a loop. Great job, Jimmy; keep up the hard work!
