Monday was a busy day at Rolling Greens.

Corey's Concrete, LLC was back at it and got the middle row of pergola piers poured for the patio project. That project keeps moving forward, and it’s exciting to see the footprint of that space starting to take shape.

We also started another big project on the course: our phased turf transition.

Yesterday we had holes #3 and #4 closed for renovation work. We started by mowing the fairways to get the dew off and help dry things out. From there, we vertical cut and slit seeded the fairways, along with the step cut, which is the transition area between the fairway and rough.

After that, we let the debris dry in the sun, dragged it with a steel mat to help break up the clumps and work the seed down into the grooves, then carefully blew off the remaining debris. Finally, we turned the water on and got the seed bed moist.

Thankfully, we got rain this morning, with more rain in the forecast. That timing helps a lot.

This is part of a slow, phased transition we’ll be working through during the season. Weather permitting, we’ll close one or two shorter holes each Monday and work through the course a little at a time. Next week, we plan to move on to #5.

The goal is to improve our fairways and step cut by introducing better grasses, thickening weak areas, and slowly moving the course in a healthier direction without tearing everything up all at once.

Would fall be the ideal time for this kind of work? Yes. But a full-course renovation in one shot just isn’t realistic for us right now. It would take more equipment, more labor, more money, and more downtime than we have available.

So we’re taking the Rolling Greens approach: steady progress, one section at a time.

This lets us keep the course open, keep golfers playing, and still make meaningful improvements each week. It may not look perfect overnight, but every pass with the mower, seeder, drag mat, blower, and irrigation is part of building a better playing surface for the long run.

Today’s Rolling Greens Youth League recap is brought to you by Bauer Built Tire & Service

What a great first day.

With nearly 40 kids signed up for Monday Youth League, we had to spread out and use the course a little differently. We had big cups out for the younger kids, temporary practice areas set up on holes #6 and #9, and four groups working through different parts of the course.

Lauren’s 7–8 year old group spent most of the morning around the putting and chipping area, learning basic golf skills and getting comfortable with their clubs. They also got to play a couple of short holes on the course.

Mike’s 9–10 year old group used #9 as their practice area, working on putting and chipping mechanics before finishing with a few short holes of their own.

Rianne’s 11–12 year old group played several holes in a scramble format before stopping at our temporary driving range on #6 to practice iron and mid-range shots.

Troy’s 13+ group headed out on the course first thing in a scramble format, played several holes, and finished with a friendly closest-to-the-pin and long drive contest.

It was a busy first morning, but the kids did a great job and the instructors kept everything moving.

Thank you to our instructors and helpers for making day one work. Managing this many kids on a golf course takes patience, energy, and flexibility, and they did a great job.

Being Flag Day, it felt like the perfect time to raise our new flag on #1.

A big thank you to Doug Gruber and American Legion Post 181 Durand, WI for donating this flag to Rolling Greens. It will be proudly flying near the #1 tee box for everyone to see as they start their round.

We appreciate the generosity and the reminder of what this flag represents. 🇺🇸

Important Monday update for Rolling Greens golfers:

There will be a lot happening at the course this coming Monday.

First, Monday is the first day of our Junior League. We have nearly 40 kids signed up, which is incredible, but it also means we need space to keep everything organized and safe.

Because of that, there will be absolutely no golf on the course until noon on Monday.

We’ll be using different areas of the course for instruction, safety, short game work, full swing practice, and on-course play. With this many kids, we need the entire property available as our practice facility.

Second, we are also beginning our phased turf renovation project on Monday.

We will begin with holes #3 and #4. If you play Monday afternoon, please skip holes #3 and #4 and proceed from #2 to #5.

Going forward, weather permitting, we will be closing 1 or 2 holes each Monday for maintenance work. We’ll be verticutting the fairways and dropping new seed into the turf as part of a gradual transition toward better, more desirable grass species.

In simple terms, we’re trying to improve the fairways from the inside out. Over time, this should help us build thicker, healthier, more consistent turf that handles play better, recovers better, and gives us a better playing surface.

This will be a gradual process, not an overnight fix, but it’s an important step forward for the golf course.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work through Monday mornings. Between Junior League and course improvements, Mondays are going to be busy, but both are important parts of building Rolling Greens into something better for the long run.

PLEASE SHARE!

This morning around 6:00, there was a small white dog on the course, possibly a poodle/Maltese mix, wearing a red collar.

He or she saw me and took off down hole #5 and into the ravine. I haven’t been able to get close, the dog keeps running off, but I can still hear barking down in the ravine.

One of our neighbors has to be missing their dog. Please share so we can hopefully get this pup home safely!

Our raffle and prize table came together because of some very generous donations, and we want to make sure these supporters get the recognition they deserve.
