Heads up, golfers: walking only is coming. 🚶

Starting Monday, Nov 16, Kennedy, Overland Park, Wellshire and Willis Case will be walking-only every day until further notice.

A long, dry season has left heavy wear on our traffic areas, and cart traffic would speed up turf loss through the winter. Going walking-only protects the courses and helps us use our irrigation water responsibly. We'll bring carts back as soon as conditions allow.

Booking a tee time? Tell your playing partners they'll be walking.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Willis Case will be aerating our greens on September 21st and 22nd! ⛳️

Why do we aerate our greens?

Golf courses aerate greens to relieve soil compaction, control thatch buildup, and improve water and oxygen pe*******on to the roots, which ultimately creates a stronger, healthier turf and a firmer, faster, and more consistent playing surface for golfers. While disruptive, aeration and subsequent topdressing with sand are essential for the long-term health and playability of the putting green.

Key reasons for aerating greens:

- Reduces soil compaction:
Foot traffic from golfers compacts the soil, making it hard for water and air to reach the grass roots. Aeration relieves this pressure, improving air and water movement.
- Controls thatch:
A layer of dead organic matter called thatch can build up on the soil surface, acting like a sponge that traps water and slows drainage. Aeration removes excess thatch, allowing for better drainage and firmer conditions.
- Promotes root growth:
Creating channels in the root zone encourages new root growth and allows existing roots to spread more freely, leading to a healthier and stronger turf.
- Improves drainage and air circulation:
The holes created during aeration provide channels for water and air to move through the soil, preventing waterlogging and ensuring the roots have the oxygen they need.
- Creates a firmer, faster playing surface:
The removal of thatch and improved soil structure result in a more stable and consistent putting surface.

How it works (The Process):

1. Aerate:
Small holes are created in the green using specialized tines to pe*****te the soil.
2. Topdress:
The holes are then filled with sand, which helps smooth the surface, improves drainage, and contributes to firmness.
3. Recovery:
While disruptive, the process is timed with good growing conditions to allow the turf to recover quickly.

Thank you for your patience through this process!
