Every coach tells him to squat deeper. Nobody checks if he actually can.

If your kid's heels lift off the ground when he squats, that's not him being lazy.
His body can't get there yet. And loading weight on top of that pattern is how young athletes grind up their knees and low backs before they're old enough to drive.

Most of the time at this age, it's the ankles.
If the ankle can't bend forward enough, the heel has to lift to compensate.
Super common in teenage boys — especially during growth spurts or after ankle sprains.

There's a quick test you can do at home. It's in the video.

Your kid might be getting labeled “slow” for something that has nothing to do with speed.

When a young athlete’s hips are tight, he can’t get into position to sprint, to run the bases, or to sit behind the plate. The coach sees a slow runner.

What’s really happening is a mobility issue
and it’s fixable.

So before games, we spend five minutes opening up the hips — simple mobility work any one can do, no equipment.

If your kid is always last in sprints AND always getting told to “hustle more” — check the hips before you question the effort.

She wants to jump higher. Watch her knee.

Six months ago her knee was collapsing every time she loaded.
Her hips weren't doing their job. One side was doing more work than the other.

That's not a strength problem. That's a movement problem.

The story you tell yourself about what you can’t do will hold you back further than your body ever will.

Tyler told me he couldn’t do a box jump. That his family just “isn’t built” for it.

He’d already decided, before he ever stepped up to one.

So we didn’t start with a box.

We started with what he was already doing every session
hip work
landing mechanics
learning to absorb force and stick it.

Piece by piece, I showed him: you’ve been doing a box jump this whole time. You just haven’t landed on a box yet.

6 inches. Then 9. Then he asked for 12. Then 15. Then 18.

The same kid who “couldn’t” was now asking for more.

Nothing about his body changed in those few minutes. The story he was telling himself did.

That’s the part most people miss — the wall is rarely physical. It’s the sentence you’ve repeated so many times you stopped questioning it.

A parent sent me this and my stomach dropped.

145 pitches over 5 days.
60 Wednesday, 70 Saturday, 15 today
while also playing third base.

Here’s the part nobody wants to hear: third base is NOT rest. A kid gunning balls across the diamond is still loading the exact arm you’re trying to protect. “He only threw 15 today” doesn’t mean the arm got a day off.

Pitch count rules exist for one reason
🙌 required recovery. The more he throws, the more rest days he’s owed.

The fact that travel ball tournaments RARELY have pitch counts blows my mind.

When you stack outings this close together AND fill the gaps with a throwing position, there’s no recovery happening at all.

And at this age the growth plates are still open. Overuse doesn’t always show up now — it shows up at 15, 16, as an elbow that won’t bounce back.

So parents: You’re allowed to say no. You’re allowed to pull your kid. Protecting the arm is never the overreaction.
