Let’s talk about the birds and the bees… and of course manatees!
As we are in spring and approach summer here in Florida, we begin to see some calves in our bay. Even though manatees don’t have a particular mating season, it is often that they will have their calves in the warmer months.

Manatee Munching 🍴
During this time of the year, we will most likely find our manatees eating to their hearts content.
A manatee eats about 10% of their body weight a day in grass. That’s a lot of salad!!! 🥗

Up close and personal 📸
Sometimes manatees can be very curious about cameras and people, making sure you’re getting their good side and best angles!
If a manatee happens to become intrigued and swim in closer for a better look at you, just FREEZE AND FLOAT.
Staying calm and still allows for the manatee to pursue its curiosity and then go back to eating, sleeping, or just simply taking a breath without being spooked.

MANATEES IN THE SPRINGS!!!
This is super rare to see around this time of the year, but our group got extremely lucky when two manatees wandered into one of our springs here in the bay.
During off season a majority of our population will spend their time eating out on our grass beds away from spring vents, where water tends to be warmer.
This goes to show that every tour can be different and total unexpected as Mother Nature is unpredictable!

It’s hot here in Florida and what’s a better way to cool off then to come swim with manatees! Here in Crystal River, FL our bay tends to stay at around 72 degrees Fahrenheit due to our springs.
Here at Seacow Safaris, once our guests are satisfied with their manatee adventure we can check out some cool springs that Kings Bay has to offer if we have time towards the end of our tour to do so!

Summer Manatee Tour Conditions
While winter is peak manatee season, summer offers a completely different and more laid-back experience.

During warmer months: Manatees are more spread out in the Gulf and backcountry, our manatee encounters are less crowded and more natural, and you may see manatees feeding, traveling, or resting in quieter areas!

Although sightings aren’t as concentrated as winter, Seacow Safaris still offers in-water manatee experiences when conditions allow. These trips are perfect for guests looking for a more private, eco-focused adventure away from peak-season crowds.

Why Summer is a Hidden Gem
Many visitors overlook summer—but it’s actually one of the best times to explore Crystal River:
Warmer water temperatures than the winter time outside of the springs which make snorkeling comfortable, and incredible wildlife diversity beyond manatees (dolphins, fish, birds)
