So someone mentioned that we need a theme song ...
Here ya go and if you can sing! Record it and put it up!
I sound like a dying frog and keep messing up the lyrics! Feel free to add or edit any way you want!

Sing it to the tune of Johnny Hortons The Battle of New Orleans!

It's 2026 they're gonna take a little trip down the long Missouri to the mighty Mississip. They'll take a lot of bacon and we pack a bunch of beans (for Lada) and they'll paddle day and night until they have weird dreams!

Refrain
They'll dip their paddles in the upper cold Missouri, paddle like hell till they all start to pray. P*e, eat , and sleep in a big ol canoe and hope they get a tail wind the whole damned way.

They'll start out at 3 forks and head to the first lake and trek around that steep old dam and do it with much haste. Thru Gates of the Mountain and to Great Falls below where the portage will be long and painfully slow!

Refrain

They'll paddle through the breaks and the great big lakes fighting winds and waves but probably no snakes. The three big lakes are over 600 miles if we get decent weather there will be big smiles!

Refrain

Sacagawea is beast of a lake, 300 thousand acres 30 wide in one place.
If the wind behaves and the waves don't toss, it will still take days this monster to cross

Refrain

Oahe's length will be a long tortuous pace, 230 miles of bluff lined lake. Around the dam to Francis Case where Walleye abound and then to the stretch below where shallow braids are found.

Refrain.

The bluffs along the north shore of Lewis and Clark lake are shining cliffs of white chalk, fossils and slate. Just one short paddle to the last dam they will see, they will celebrate with chicken from a local eatery!

Refrain

Past Yankton its only 800 more miles, no dams or portages just current all the while. From Souix City down it’s a rock lined ditch, the currents fast and swirling but it can be a bitch!

Refrain

When they finally get to KC please cheer and be their friend! They'll ll be needing some encouragement to get them to the end. 300 plus miles to the ol Mississippi and the party at St Charles will make us all real tipsy! .

Refrain!

The MRSR gang now controls street trade of dried cherries and blueberries in the Twin Ports area!

Also, my next band will be called “The Tart Cherry Mafia.” Scott Mansker is on bass, and we will hold open auditions for other positions in St. Louis in mid-July.

Mindy here! Continuing with the kitchen theme, this is what's been happening in Mindy Schroeder-Kragness kitchen this week! It's quite an undertaking to feed 25 support staff and 4 endurance athletes out of a mobile kitchen for 25 days! To try ease into things the first week so basecamp has a chance to get in the groove, it's helpful to do so some Pre-cooking. Items made: 24 Black beans burgers, 3 batches of Cashew Creme, 6 batches of Walnut Pesto, large batches of Chili and Coconut Curry- enough for 30 one cup servings. If anyone has any questions regarding the food or menu, feel free to ask!

We will be providing the paddlers with around 5000 calories a day, with supplements from snacks and liquid calories.

We are lucky enough to have Chad Kragness and Bill Kobernus heading up the food preparation with support from Chris Knecht Church, Anita Werderich and Mindy.

Report from Curt’s kitchen: this is what ten pounds of pitted dates looks like when packaged in 3 oz portions for four endurance adventurers (idiots?) preparing to paddle 2,341 miles, virtually nonstop. I had to visit nine grocery stores in the Duluth/Superior area to procure these dates, and they represent the majority of the pitted dates that were available in our area. (Also, they represent ALL of the dates that I rated highest on the quality and price matrix! 😜)

Bakers and snackers around here will be talking about the mysterious Datepocalypse of 2026 for years to come.

Duffus here, I got the sponsor logos on the canoe. We will be heading to Montana a week from Friday! We are getting close!

Scott Miller team captain here:

When we paddle through Yankton, South Dakota, we’ll pass beneath one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the Meridian Bridge.

Completed in 1924, the Meridian Bridge was built as a double-deck vertical lift bridge spanning the Missouri River between South Dakota and Nebraska.

At the time, it transformed travel across the river, replacing unreliable ferries and pontoon bridges and strengthening the connection between Yankton and communities to the south.

The bridge was originally designed with the hope that trains would use the lower deck, but when a rail line never came through Yankton, both decks were used for vehicles — northbound traffic on top and southbound traffic below.

For decades, the Meridian Bridge served as an important transportation link, a point of regional pride, and a symbol of Yankton’s shift from “River City” to “Bridge City.”

After the Discovery Bridge opened in 2008, the Meridian Bridge was retired from vehicle traffic but given new life as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

Today, it remains a favorite place to take in sweeping views of the Missouri River and will be a prime spot to see the paddlers as they pass Yankton.

Thanks to the Friends of the Missouri National Recreational River for their help in creating this content and stewarding such an extraordinary stretch of the river. Execute Director Caroline Ver Mulm took pictures of us when we paddled under the bridge during our training trip a few weeks ago (two of those pics are included here)

The Missouri River Speed Record paddlers won’t experience just one river.

Over 2,341 miles, they’ll move through massive reservoirs, channelized stretches, engineered banks, and the few remaining free-flowing sections of the Missouri River.

Two of those free-flowing stretches are protected as the .

Here, the river is still alive with movement. It builds and reshapes sandbars, flows around islands, carves chutes, fills backwaters, and creates the shifting habitat that so many fish, birds, and wildlife depend on.

This is the Missouri River in one of its most dynamic forms — powerful, changing, and still connected to its natural rhythm.

As the Speed Record team travels downstream, their journey offers a reminder of how much the river has changed, how much diversity remains, and why these rare free-flowing stretches are worth protecting.
