Sun Coast Swimmers Shine Bright at WFLA Spring Open!
The heat wasn't just coming from the Florida sun this weekend at the Southwest Pool Complex. The Sun Coast Swim Team (SCST) descended upon Largo for the WFLA Spring Open, and the results were nothing short of electric! Competing in the demanding Long Course (50-meter) format, SCST athletes proved that hard work in the pool pays off, delivering gutsy performances and a haul of podium finishes.
Girlsโ Division: Speed and Stamina
Leading the charge for the senior girls, Sophia Campa (14) was a force of nature, racking up a massive 22 points. Campa secured a blistering 2nd place finish in the Senior 50m Free with a time of 29.21, proving herself as one of the fastest sprinters in the water. She wasnโt done there, showing incredible versatility by taking 4th in the 100m Free (1:04.73), 5th in both the 200m Free (2:25.44) and 100m Back (1:17.94), and a strong 7th in the 200m IM (2:45.09).
Lia Richards (17) brought the veteran leadership, hauling in 17 points and dominating the butterfly events. Richards flew to 3rd place finishes in both the Senior 100m Fly (1:10.85) and the grueling 200m Fly (2:46.46). She showed her endurance in the freestyle events as well, taking 8th in the 100m (1:06.95) and 200m (2:28.99), while breaking into the top ten in the 400m Free (10th, 5:14.97) and the 100m Breast (6th, 1:28.79).
Mini Ricci (12) made a massive splash in the 11-12 division, proving she has the heart of a distance champion. Ricci surged to a stellar 2nd place finish in the 400m Free, touching the wall in a remarkable 5:22.11. She continued her dominant run with a 4th place finish in the 200m IM (3:01.64). Showing no fear against older competition, she also stepped up to the Senior division, placing 11th in the 100m Back (1:26.65), 12th in the 200m IM (3:00.81), and 13th in the 100m Breast (1:40.96).
In the 11-12 division, Zoe Zahringer (12) fought hard across four events, showing great technical growth. Zahringerโs highlight was a strong 13th place finish in the 100m Breast, touching the wall at 2:10.49. She also held her own in the sprints, clocking 40.57 in the 50m Free and 1:27.12 in the 100m Free.
Boysโ Division: The Future is Now
The youth movement was alive and well for the SCST boys! Banyan Collins (7) put the "8 & Under" category on notice, collecting 26 points. Collins was nearly untouchable, taking 2nd place in the 50m Free (40.83) and the 50m Fly (58.11). He also claimed 3rd in the 50m Breast (1:02.24) and 4th in the 50m Back (58.05). Not afraid of the big kids, he also stepped up to the 10 & Under division, finishing 8th in the 200m Free (3:26.40) and 10th in the 100m Breast (2:05.83).
Nine-year-old Connor McLemore showcased his butterfly prowess, securing a fantastic 5th place finish in the 10 & Under 100m Fly with a time of 1:56.70. McLemore kept the pace high all weekend, finishing 12th in the 50m Fly (54.15) and competing fiercely in the 50m Free (40.69) and 100m Free (1:35.46).
In the 13-14 age group, Cullen Alford (14) was the man of the hour, delivering a performance for the record books! Alford not only secured 5th place in the 50m Free with a lightning-fast 28.16, but that time officially marks a new FLAG (Florida Age Group) cut, punching his ticket to the elite state-level competition! Alfordโs distance game was equally on point, taking 3rd place in the 400m Free with a stellar 4:46.75 and another 3rd in the 200m Breast (2:59.38). He also placed 5th in the 200m Free (2:16.39) and 7th in the 100m Free (1:04.71).
Cy Collins (13) proved to be the teamโs workhorse, competing in a staggering eight events! Collins excelled in the longer distances, taking 6th place in the 200m Back with a time of 3:04.08. He also broke the top 15 in the 100m Back (11th, 1:25.05) and pushed through a grueling 200m IM (3:05.81). His weekend was a masterclass in endurance, spanning everything from the 50m Free (32.42) to the 100m Fly (1:41.30).
SCST Power! With individual accolades and that massive FLAG cut from Alford, the Sun Coast Swim Team left an indelible mark on Largo this weekend. The future looks incredibly bright!
