When?
All functional movement

What does this mean?
Simply put, the weaker your position, the lower your power output potential. The stronger your position, the greater your power output potential.

“More Balance = More Power”

When?
All functional movement

What does this mean?
Simply put, the more balanced you are under/over the bar, the more power you can push into the ground.

How do you improve balance?
- Increase mobility
- Slow down your lifts
- Drill positions through variations
- Stop wearing over engineered footwear

“Like pushing a door open” - picked up from

When?
Deadlift, Squatting variations, Cleans, Snatches, etc.

What does this mean?
“If I ask you to go push a door open, you’re not going to push with your fingertips or the heel of your hand. You push full hand.” -

In a similar fashion, whenever you are pushing your feet into the ground, push with your full foot.

Doing so transfers as much power as possible AND helps keep your system balanced throughout the movement.

Similar cues:
“Full foot -> full power”
“Even foot pressure”
“Root your foot”
“Whole foot -> whole time”

“Like carrying your groceries”

When?
Efficiently holding, carrying, moving weight

What does this mean?
“Think of holding, carrying, or moving weight like carrying your groceries into the house.

You don’t carry a bunch of grocery bags with your arms extended, way out in front of your body.

You keep them close to your hip because when they are directly next to your hip joint, they are directly underneath your shoulder, you’re more mechanically efficient.” -

When?
Describing core to extremity movement

What does this mean?
Functional movement begins at the core of the body and radiates out towards the extremities.

In the push press example shown above:
1. Trunk establishes mid-line stability. Hips dip down, knees bend, and both drive to extension.

2. Power travels outward to legs and shoulders.

3. Power launches bar off front rack, shoulders and arms push through to finish.

“Keep it tight to keep it light”

When?
Picking weight up off the ground

What does this mean?
Similar to carrying a bucket of water, keeping it close to the body will be a more efficient use of power. The farther the weight is from the body, the heavier it will feel. When moving weight on a barbell, keep it tight to the body to keep the bar feeling as light as possible.

“Space is weakness”

“No daylight”
“Like carrying your groceries”
“Bucket of water”
