Story Time with Coach Jay!!
I turned 44 a few weeks ago. And yes, I still believe age is just a number. But I also believe you have to train smarter as you get older. Let’s be honest — I do not recover as fast as I used to.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been dealing with a tough combination of chronic neck pain (stemming from a motorcycle accident 16 years ago) along with some significant lower back pain and spasms. The back issue did not happen in the gym or while lifting. It was frustrating, to say the least.
But here’s the difference: experience and humility.
Instead of pushing through it recklessly, I leaned on the knowledge and expertise of the coaches on my staff and my business partner — people who are highly educated in corrective exercise and injury management. I buckled down and committed to doing the corrective work consistently. Mobility work. Stability training. Core engagement. Recovery protocols. The unglamorous stuff.
And after putting in that work over the past few weeks, I feel confident and ready to ramp things back up next week.
This is exactly why I prioritize my health and fitness.
People often ask me why it matters so much to me. The answer is simple: I’ve been consistent long enough to know what it truly feels like to be healthy and strong. And once you experience that feeling, nothing else compares to it.
The second reason is even more important — my family depends on me. They deserve the strongest, healthiest version of me possible. If I am not taking care of myself, how can I take the best care of them? If I am weak, unhealthy, or constantly injured because I neglected my body, who carries the load?
Fitness and nutrition do not have to control your life. They just need to be a higher priority than three hours of television or endless scrolling on your phone. Small daily disciplines compound.
Setbacks will happen. Injuries happen. Life happens.
Adapt. Recover. Overcome.
At 44, I am committed to making this look strong, capable, and resilient. And I challenge every one of you to step outside your comfort zone and work toward the version of yourself you’ve always wanted.
Do not wish for it.
Work for it.
