Creating Ability We design and manufacture paddling gear that gives all people the ability to get out on the water.

Creating Ability is focused on removing barriers to paddlesports; it exists to bring joy, peace, and healing to persons with disabilities of all kinds. Our goal is to enable each person to independently participate in outdoor activities, and to be able to share that experience with those around them. From adaptive seating and amputee sockets to outriggers and transfer units, we design and manufact

ure adaptations that stabilize the paddler, stabilize the watercraft and maximize power in the paddlestroke. All to enable everyone to experience the peace and

Getting into the water from a dock is the easy part. Lock your brakes, lean forward and let gravity handle the rest. Getting back onto the dock? Um…

Enter the SwimStep, a new modular assistive staircase designed to make transferring back onto a dock more manageable.

The SwimStep mounts to the side of the dock and contains a user-determined number of plastic steps that descend from below the water level to the dock, allowing you to climb out of the water via a series of small transfers.

At dock level, another series of steps makes it easier for you to get to wheelchair height.

Only a handful are installed so far, all in the Midwest, but a demo video has already garnered 400,000 views and the designer, Kevin Carr of creatingability.com, is partnering with an accessible dock manufacturer to increase access.
