Take a lap or two inside the #911 DR. PowerSports Racing Turbo Talon. Bonus points to whoever can point out the couple failed attempts at a "bump" and run. One of them definitely redefines the word bump. At the end you'll get to see what happens when a main shaft fails in the Sub transmission. šŸ™„ I thought I could feel something wasn't right so I was trying to be smooth in the chop through the corners but it obviously didn't help. 🫣

Round 3 Central Series Update Solid day with the 911 DR. PowerSports / Honda_Racing_US Turbo Talon in the Pro SXS class. We came away with P2 in Moto 1 and P2 in the Main. The car in first was simply too much for us today — we gave it our best shot but just didn’t have enough today. Still a good points day and the Talon felt strong and consistent. Tomorrow is Round 4 and we’ll be back pushing hard for that win.

My trip to PPEI for the UTV 96 Champ Off-Road tune was about what I expected, some things to be excited about and some of what I feared. It appears the Talon likes the boost window of 12 to 15 PSI. For comparison, the Outlaw series car running E90 Ignite will take all the boost you care to throw at it. Here are some differences. The Ignite fuel car will take 4 more degrees of timing and literally double the boost although I race it between 16 and 20 PSI. This Champ series car on UTV 96 takes 4 degrees less timing (to keep it safe under race conditions) and will only run 12 to 15 PSI. I wouldn't call it a powerhouse but I will make up for any lack of power with an abundance of skill, set up and car qualityšŸ¤šŸ˜…. Looking forward to the Champ race in Wisconsin next week!

Disaster Recovery Update After last weekend’s chaos and the engine autopsy, things are moving fast in the right direction! Huge shoutout to Greg Bell for getting the #01 Turbo Talon Champ Series Pro SxS header delivered straight to my door this morning! And another big thank you to Andy .powersports for the lightning-quick turnaround on the fresh engine.

This week we’re heading to for some fresh numbers, then it’s back to the track. Schedule ahead:

Next weekend → 911 Outlaw Turbo Talon hits Texas

The following weekend → 01 Turbo Talon makes its official debut in the Champ Off-Road series Pro SxS Class.

Couldn’t do any of this without the people who move mountains when it counts. Appreciate you all!

Follow-Up Post: Engine Autopsy + Good News Update After last weekend’s chaos at the Champ Series opener, we finally tore into the blown motor on the new Turbo Talon. First reaction? I’m blaming the tuner

— you clearly spent all your time worrying about AFR and completely ignored AOR (air oil ratio)! šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£
But in all seriousness… this one was 100% on me. I plumbed the remote oil filter and high-mount remote oil cooler differently than I have in the past. The lines coming straight out the bottom allowed drain-back, and I was running the wrong Wix Racing filter (51061R instead of the 51060R with the anti-drainback valve). Who knew? Evidently not me… but I’ve now paid for that education. Every education has a cost and this one was no different.

The good news? The new engine is already done and partially installed! I’m just waiting on a new oil cooler and a few other go-fast/reliability bits to finish it up tomorrow. We’ll be back swinging soon — stronger and smarter. Appreciate all the support through the ups and downs of this build!

Huge thanks to my buddy Greg J Rekward for this absolute gem! After our chaotic Champ Series opener at Lucas Oil Speedway last weekend (new motor grenading on the dyno, zero sleep, destroyed phone, lost wiper arm, and a full comedy of errors), Greg surprised me with this one-of-a-kind custom trophy built entirely from scrap and broken parts. The little guy is made from:
Piston
Turbo
Valves
Harmonic balancer base
Wrench
And the cape? Main bearings out of a Cat diesel engine

Greg had no idea the failure was bearing-related when he built it — the cape choice is just perfect timing and makes it even better. This trophy perfectly captures the spirit of the weekend. We didn’t get to race the new Turbo Talon, but we still had a strong support weekend for the Honda Talon family. Shoutout to Cross Kirchmeyer for sweeping Pro-Stock and to Tom Rutkowski for his hard-charging debut (that brutal flip on the big jump was wild — glad you’re okay, brother!).Appreciate you Greg — this is going straight on the shelf with pride. The new motor is already underway and we’ll be back swinging soon.

Almost Race Report:

The Great Turbo Talon Cross-Country Misadventure (Champ Series Round 1) this weekend was supposed to mark the debut of the brand-new Champ-built Turbo Talon at the opening round of the Champ Series at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. Instead, it became one of the most chaotic ā€œsupport modeā€ weekends we’ve had. The trip kicked off with a trip to GForce Racing Suspension Technologies in Tennessee, where we were getting the fresh Talon fitted with a new set of custom-built shocks (eyelet-to-eyelet custom work that added an extra full day). From there I left Tuesday evening and drove straight through to PPEI in Louisiana for tuning. I arrived around 5 AM, unloaded, prepped the car, and heat-cycled it. Erik got it on the dyno while I tried to catch some sleep… only to wake up to the dreaded call: ā€œWe have some bad news.ā€ During low-throttle data runs (just 16% throttle at 4000 rpm), the engine suffered a catastrophic failure. The oil filter was full of glitter. Engine was done. We explored every possible way to swap engines and still make the race, but the logistics were impossible — 10 hours to Lucas and 16 hours from the nearest spare engine. No way to make it work in time. So we made the call to head to Wheatland anyway. At the Track: Full Support Mode Even though the #911 Turbo Talon couldn’t turn a wheel in anger, we made the most of the weekend. We displayed the car (which still looked like a million bucks), delivered shocks from G-Force for another racer, provided pit support, spotting duties, and general help wherever needed. We’re proud to be part of the Honda Talon racer family, so we did everything we could to support the other Talon drivers: Cross Kirtchmeyer lit it up in the Pro-Stock class — winning both races. Absolute dominance!

Tom Rutkowski made his Pro-Stock debut in his fresh Talon. Running strong on Sunday with just 3 laps to go, he caught a nasty crosswind on the big 150-ft back jump, landed sideways at around 80 mph, and had one of the most violent flips you’ll see at Wheatland. Parts were scattered everywhere.

Huge relief that Tom is relatively okay — the safety gear did its job. The car is damaged but repairable. Respect to his fab guy for building a chassis that took that kind of hit on its first weekend out.

Personal Comedy of Errors
Because one disaster clearly wasn’t enough: Dropped my phone Friday and destroyed the screen (basically unusable all weekend)
Lost a wiper arm on the toter running through severe thunderstorms in Alabama
Rode the Grom pit bike 60 miles round trip trying (unsuccessfully) to get the phone fixed or replaced. Loaned Tom the brand-new G-Force shocks built for my other short-course Talon… they came back looking well, destroyed like his Talon. Near-zero sleep for days.
It was one of those weeks where sleep was optional and everything that could go wrong did. But we still had a solid weekend supporting the Honda Talon family, watching great racing, and building relationships in the pits. The new Turbo Talon will be back stronger once the fresh engine is in. No debut, but plenty of lessons learned and good work done. Appreciate all the partners and the Honda Talon community for the continued support.
