CASTLETON, VT- The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team hosted Sage College at Dave Wolk Stadium on Saturday evening. The Spartans scored three times in the second half to pull away from the Gators and win their first game of the season 5-1

How It Happened
It was a scoreless opening period. Both teams registered a shot with the Gators getting one on frame

The Spartans upped the pressure in the second quarter. Castleton had three penalty corners and two shots on goal in the first minute and a half. After the third penalty corner, Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt./Windsor) was able to get one into the back of the cage to put the home team ahead 1-0. 29 seconds later, Ava LaRoss (Westminster, Vt./Bellows Fall Union) scored off a rebound to put Castleton ahead 2-0 just under the 20-minute mark. The Spartans tallied three more shots on goal in the quarter, but the score remained 2-0 at halftime.
Sage closed to within one as Abby Barbagallo poked one through to make it a 2-1 contest less than two minutes into the third quarter. Castleton came back to score two goals to increase their lead to 4-1.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Spartans as the Gators did not register a shot. Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) scored Castleton’s final goal of the game.

CASTLETON, VT- The Vermont State Castleton football team is ready to embark on its 2026 season as the Spartans prepare for their home opener against Westfield State on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at Dave Wolk Stadium.

The Spartans hope their final season in the New Jersey Athletic Conference will be a successful one. Castleton will rejoin the MASCAC in 2027 where it played one season in 2024.

The Spartans have three players return that earned NJAC All-Conference honors last year. On the offensive side is junior tight end Brody Tyburski who was an Honorable Mention. He had 31 catches for 303 yards and a touchdown, averaging 33.67 receiving yards per game.

Senior Ryan Freund and first year Max Cutler will be at running back. At wide receiver, sophomore Ty Dowell returns and is joined by first year Tyler Gentry and sophomore Anthony Lopez-Hippler. Dowell caught nine passes for 108 yards a year ago. The offensive line has a pair of experienced starters back in juniors Quan Johnson and Alex Simon with seniors Joe Medrano and Caleb Russell joining them.

The quarterbacks will be RJ Monger and Reese Rotella. Monger will see his first action under center while Rotella had one touchdown pass in brief duty last year in his first season with the Spartans.

On the defensive side of the ball, 2025 NJAC Second Team selection Deacon Schneider headlines the group. Schneider led the conference in assisted tackles (57) and finished second overall in total tackles (88) a year ago. Tyler Buxton is also back at strong side linebacker. Buxton had a team-high 10 tackles for a loss of 32 yards and added two sacks. He also forced three fumbles and blocked two kicks. Sophomore Brendan McMahon will look to make an impact at the middle linebacker position.

The defensive line will feature some new players factoring in that hope to bring pressure up front. Kaden James moves from the linebacker position with Owen Bombardier moving from the offensive line. Kavon Graham-Jones saw time last year as did Lazaro Herrera. First years Tanner Lord and Tanner Fields will both see action in the rotation as will junior college transfer Romel Argueta.

At cornerback, 2025 NJAC Honorable Mention Brendan Driscoll tied for fifth in the league with two interceptions and paced the Spartans with five pass breakups. Junior Bobby Kinsella will be at the opposite corner position. He had 14 total tackles and one pass breakup in 2025.

Senior Alex Polli is back at safety. He had a career season in 2025 as he totaled 46 tackles (18 solo, 28 assisted) and broke up two passes. Junior Zeke Dubois is the other safety and he defended three passes with 17 tackles last season.

Kicking and punting duties will go to Wyatt Fuller, Zach Dragon, and Drew Frostick.

The VTSU Castleton Field Hockey team begins the 2026 season under new leadership. Bella Kondi takes over the reins of a squad coming off an 8-11 season a year ago and an appearance in the Little East Semifinals.

“It’s been really exciting to get to know this group and start building something together,” said Kondi. “They’ve worked extremely hard, embraced the expectations we’ve set, and I’ve been really impressed by their competitiveness and willingness to grow. There’s a lot of energy around this team, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”

The Spartans bring back several veterans with seven juniors joining two seniors and a fifth year. Last year’s top two scorers return in juniors Ava LaRoss and Gwyn Vincent. Peyton Richardson is back for a fifth year as her 2025 campaign was cut short by injury. Two seasons ago, she started 21 games scoring 13 goals to go with 10 assists and was named to the LEC First Team. Both Vincent and Richardson were recently selected to the NFHCA Watchlist.

The defense features a pair of first years in Jaymison Harbison and Alexa Smentkowski. Sophomore Jaedyn Roberson moves from goalkeeper to the defensive backfield. “I’m really excited about the potential of our defense,” said Kondi. “We have some new players stepping into important roles, and they’ve brought a lot of athleticism and versatility to the group. They’re continuing to build chemistry and communication, and I think that unit has the potential to be a real strength for us this season.”

The team’s new goalkeeper is sophomore Izabella Cosden. She transferred to VTSU Castleton from Sweet Briar College in Virginia where Kondi previously coached. “I’m really excited to have Izabella (Bella) here,” noted Kondi. “Having coached her at Sweet Briar, I knew the type of player and person she would bring to this program on and off the field. She’s competitive, driven, and brings a level of experience that will be really valuable for our team. I have a lot of confidence in her, and I’m excited to see her make an impact here as a student-athlete.”

After starting the season on the road at Union College, the Spartans host four straight games at the friendly confines of Dave Wolk Stadium. The month of September wraps up with the team playing three straight road games before hosting Oneonta to finish off the month. The Spartans hope their 2026 season will culminate in another playoff push.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.- Vermont State University Castleton’s Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt./Windsor HS) and Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) have both been named to the 2026 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Watchlist, as announced by the organization Thursday morning.

Richardson and Vincent are among 204 student-athletes nationwide recognized for their exceptional potential to earn NFHCA All-Region and All-American honors this season. To be eligible for the Watchlist, athletes must have previously received notable accolades within the past two years—such as NFHCA All-Region or All-American honors, All-Conference selections, participation in the Senior Nexus Championship, NCAA All-Tournament Team recognition, or inclusion on U.S. National or International team rosters. Nominations are submitted by NFHCA member coaches.

This is Richardson’s second straight appearance on the Watchlist. She started seven games for the Spartans in 2025 before her season ended early due to injury. She scored four goals and had one assist during that stretch. Richardson was a 2024 Little East Conference First Team selection and was also named NFHCA Second Team All-Region.

Vincent started 12 contests last year. She led the Spartan offense for much of the year, finishing with 21 points on eight goals and five assists. For her efforts, Vincent was named to the LEC First Team.
