Sometimes we can look to the most unlikely sources for inspiration. In this case it would be a white belt. After sitting on the sidelines for YEARS as her husband and son progressed up through ranks, Angela David came to the realization she was ready for a lifestyle change and a challenge. In January 2024, our resident Black Belt Ms. Phim put out a one month, 1200 calorie per day challenge with only one person, Angela David replying. Angela not only completed the very strict challenge, counting every calorie (literally) but embarked on a tough workout regimen including running, gymnastics, weights, rock climbing and Jiu Jitsu. Angela started training in Ms. Phim's Phiminator Lindsey ladies only Lioness class at Legacy TKD and BJJ every Saturday, even getting on the mats on days she was injured, just to watch and ask questions. She is now a regular at Delariva AND trains at home with her son Deegan and her husband Derick. Anyone who works with her knows she is TOUGH.
Angela went from being reluctant to get on the mats, to setting a lofty goal and seeing it through. Yesterday, Angela participated in her very first Jiu Jitsu tournament, an IBJJF event, and bested an opponent who has a built a very good competitive resume. Angela is one of a handful who set a goal, never got sidetracked and saw it through to completion. All this while being a full time mom, wife, working at Axis Powersports and all life's other distractions. Never an excuse. Let Angela serve as an inspiration to all those who think they're too busy, too old, too young, too tired, whatever. Hat's off to all our competitors, students and coaches who push to make themselves and those around them better..and most importantly, our opponents for giving us the opportunity to challenge ourselves. TRAIN HARD and CONGRATULATIONS on a WELL DESERVED GOLD, Angela David
