We’re stoked to partner with local organizations to bring back a THIRD skills weekend of subsidized, low cost clinics on a variety of topics for everyone to Blacksburg, VA on September 12th-13th! 🤝

In partnership with the New River Land Trust, The Town of Blacksburg, and the New River Valley Bicycle Association, each 3-hour clinic is only $44 (that’s just ⅓ the regular price!) 🔥

We are so grateful to team up with the community to make mountain bike instruction more accessible. 💚 Everyone deserves access to quality instruction and the opportunity for amplified progression in a sport they love.

🚗 Blacksburg is only a 3.5 hour drive from Asheville….✨ It’s similar to WNC mountain views, but think more rolling hills and scenic farms throughout the region. If you haven’t visited, it’s well worth the roadtrip.

⏳Last time, the event sold out fast, don’t wait to reserve your spot!

One of the most common challenges we see for advanced riders is when they already know how to jump, but just can’t seem to do it ✨consistently ✨.

One run might feel perfectly smooth, and the next you are getting bucked or twisting in the air.

When fundamental mechanics aren’t completely dialed, it’s incredibly hard to intentionally adjust to different jump shapes and speeds. ➡️ That’s exactly where an experienced coach makes a difference: we can spot the tiny, subtle details causing those inconsistencies that you can’t feel yourself yet.

📝 Take the rider in this video as a great example. They already have the basics down, but still deal with those inconsistent outcomes.

❌ But, looking closer, we can see unintentional rotation. When standing with level pedals, they were letting their forward hip twist slightly. If you press into a jump face with your pelvis out of square, you introduce a rotational force that makes the bike twist in the air.

✅ We took it back to flat ground to re-dial the movement using level lifts + focused on:

➡️ Coasting in a tall, neutral position with level pedals.

➡️ Keeping the hips perfectly square to the shoulders (no forward hip rotation).

➡️ Holding that square position while pressing into the ground and springing up.
Traveling in a perfectly straight line without carving or leaning.

👉 Intermediate and advanced riders usually need small changes in their riding in order to lead to big outcomes. Plateaus are normal or even some regression after pushing the boundaries too fast when progressing. There are always opportunities to grow, you just have to know where to look! 👀

✅ Let a professional diagnose the small details and help you get your jumping consistent and safe.

Why?
We work on ✨lateral transfers✨ as a simple way to learn how to carve a slight arc up the ramp. It gets you the sense of pressing on the ramp while not going in a perfectly straight line. The arc on the ramp initiates the rotation needed for a whip. 🔑

With lateral transfers, we’re working on that initiation separately as a skill before we add the other motions on top of it that make the whip happen. Plus, it helps you gain confidence with moving the bike around and staying relaxed in the air.

How?

👉 Simple start: level lifts on flat ground. Learn level lifts in a straight line, then do a level lift to move the bike over laterally. To do this, lean in one direction while pressing and exploding upward. Then, move the bike back underneath you while in the air. Aim to move wheels 6-12in to the side.

👉 Keep learning on a simple jump: approach the ramp just right of the center of the trail. Leave the lip just right of center and try to land just left of center. We want to work towards moving laterally in the air 1-2ft.

👉 Progression: work on making it a 2-3ft lateral transfer by carving an S-turn up the ramp. Start on the left side of the trail, then move over so you are on the far right side at the start of the ramp. From there, carve an arc back towards the center of the trail at the lip. More aggressive arc = more lateral movement in the air.

What’s next?
Once you have that locked down, you are ready for Step 2 of our whip progressions. 🔒Next up, we are adding in bar turns! Stay tuned for the next breakdown.
