Not exactly the day we wanted, but still a great day hanging out with friends and supporting them at the track.
Owen came out strong in practice and finished 3rd, with only .035 separating him from the leader. He felt really good in the kart and was carrying a great pace.
For qualifying, we made the decision to start in the back and give him some space from the herd of karts battling up front. It worked out well and he qualified 5th.
The heat race got wild early with a big crash in turn 2 involving several karts. Owen was able to avoid it, quickly worked his way up to 2nd, and held that position to the end. That put him in a great spot for the final.
The final was going really well until it wasn’t. He was holding 2nd when a train of karts caught up to him. He ended up getting hit by another kart and was given a 5-second penalty for avoidable contact, which dropped him to 5th.
Overall, I’m super proud of him. The call was questionable, but our Insta360 didn’t capture the side of the kart where the contact happened. Owen stepped way outside of his comfort zone and tried to protest the penalty, but without the right video angle, there wasn’t much we could do.
We also ran a new motor from Lawson Speed Shop and were really impressed. His MGM Chassis great all day.
We’ll take this one as a teaching moment, keep learning, and come back ready to defend his P3 in points in July.
Next up, we’re heading to Whiteland and New Castle Motorsports Park in June. Looking forward to getting Owen on a couple of new tracks!
