What a weekend at Music City Kartplex for the Rhythm & Race Series Round 5!

Practice got off to a great start with Owen putting down the second-fastest lap. Qualifying didn’t quite go our way, though, and he lined up P6 for the heat. We just didn’t have enough time to get the tires where they needed to be.

He drove a smart, clean heat race, defended well, and brought it home in P6 to start the feature.

By the time the final rolled around at nearly 9:00 PM, the track had cooled off and the dew was starting to settle in, making conditions even more challenging. The front group included two national-level drivers and one very fast local racer. Owen fought hard, but after getting separated from that lead pack, he found himself in another battle. He stayed composed, raced clean, and brought the MGM Chassis home in a solid 4th-place finish.

Most importantly, it was a weekend with no contact, no damage, and a kart that’s ready for the next race. We’ll take that every time.

I’ve said it before, but the karting community is something special. There are always people willing to lend a hand, share advice, or help another family. Owen’s friendships continue to grow well beyond Bowling Green. We’ve become great friends with numerous racers and their family’s. Owen just got back from a week and a half with a friend, Fisher Graham, and his family in Arkansas. Those relationships are every bit as valuable as the racing.

A huge thank you to Grid Walk for always capturing these incredible moments.

Now it’s time to get ready for the next one. We’re looking to put the MGM Chassis powered by Lawson Speed Shop and supported by NCM Insurance Agency Collector Vehicle Insurance, NCM Motorsports Park, and National Corvette Museum on the podium!

Thanks to Grid Walk for capturing some of the best parts of this journey for Owen and me!

Seeing him with his friends, working on the kart together, hearing his feedback after a session, and watching his confidence grow has been pretty amazing!

We’ve had a blast doing this together. I’m not sure where this karting journey will take him, but I’m enjoying every minute of it. The racing is fun, but the time together has been the best part. 🏁

Really a great couple of days in Indianapolis for some racing at K1 Circuit Whiteland and New Castle Motorsports Park!

We had a blast hanging out with friends, racers, and meeting some new people this weekend.

K1 was a good experience. The front runners were factory-supported drivers who race there regularly, and we were one of the few teams learning the track for the first time. We made a lot of changes to the kart throughout the weekend and got better each session, but we just couldn’t hang with the locals. We’ll be back. Owen absolutely loved that track.

New Castle was special, at least to me. For his first time there, Owen did really well. Out of 16 drivers, he qualified 9th and finished 9th. At one point he worked his way up to 6th and held the fastest lap of the session for several laps.

I’m extremely proud of him. These tracks were completely new to him, and he continues to learn and improve every time he gets in the kart.

What impresses me most about this sport is the people. Owen has built a really strong group of friends through karting, and I’ve met some incredible people along the way. Racers and families who are willing to help, teach, share setups, and do whatever they can to help someone get better.

I’m grateful for this community and looking forward to watching Owen continue to progress. The results will come. Right now, he’s learning, having fun, and making memories with some great people. That’s pretty hard to beat.

Not exactly the day we wanted, but still a great day hanging out with friends and supporting them at the track.

Owen came out strong in practice and finished 3rd, with only .035 separating him from the leader. He felt really good in the kart and was carrying a great pace.

For qualifying, we made the decision to start in the back and give him some space from the herd of karts battling up front. It worked out well and he qualified 5th.

The heat race got wild early with a big crash in turn 2 involving several karts. Owen was able to avoid it, quickly worked his way up to 2nd, and held that position to the end. That put him in a great spot for the final.

The final was going really well until it wasn’t. He was holding 2nd when a train of karts caught up to him. He ended up getting hit by another kart and was given a 5-second penalty for avoidable contact, which dropped him to 5th.

Overall, I’m super proud of him. The call was questionable, but our Insta360 didn’t capture the side of the kart where the contact happened. Owen stepped way outside of his comfort zone and tried to protest the penalty, but without the right video angle, there wasn’t much we could do.

We also ran a new motor from Lawson Speed Shop and were really impressed. His MGM Chassis great all day.

We’ll take this one as a teaching moment, keep learning, and come back ready to defend his P3 in points in July.

Next up, we’re heading to Whiteland and New Castle Motorsports Park in June. Looking forward to getting Owen on a couple of new tracks!
