Senior linebacker Jysir Chatmon ( #11) of St. Thomas Aquinas is a hardworking, dedicated player who consistently looks for ways to improve and takes football seriously. At 6'0", 215 pounds, the Class of 2027 MLB/OLB/edge prospect brings an attacking mindset, a frame that passes the eye test, and the ability to chase down outside runs with above-average speed from his second step to 20 yards. He is not afraid to stuff the hole, and recent film and production back that up—including a strong Week 4 performance against Rockhurst with 2 sacks, 7 tackles, and 2 tackles for loss, plus additional highlights from Weeks 4-6. Chatmon has also shown commitment in the weight room, recently posting a 500-pound squat and a 335-pound bench press PR. As he put it: “I’m a hardworking, dedicated football player who is always looking for ways to improve my game. I’m competitive, coachable, and willing to put in the work to reach my goals. I want coaches to know that I take football seriously, bring a strong work ethic everyday, and am determined to earn the opportunity to play at the next level.” Playing for the Saints, a perennial power that remains competitive in the upper ranks of Kansas high school football, he continues to put that work ethic on display.

Senior Trae Wise has become the missing piece the Salina Central Mustangs didn’t fully realize they needed when the season began. After Alex Garcia went down with a season-ending injury, the offense leaned heavily on the playmaking of quarterback Griffin Hall while Eli Kreighbaum helped fill the backfield. Coaches ultimately wanted Kreighbaum’s skill set elsewhere, so they turned to Wise from the defensive back room. In just a couple of weeks, the Class of 2027 athlete has helped complete what coach Mark Sandbo was looking to achieve from the start.

Moving from cornerback to running back for the first time, Wise made it look natural. Against Newton he rushed for 41 yards on five carries and made his biggest impact in the short passing game, catching five balls for 124 yards—including an 85-yard touchdown on a screen. Sandbo praised him as dynamic, fast, physical, and someone who “runs angry… the type of stuff we haven’t had most of this year.” Wise said the transition felt natural because he already had the aggression from defense and quickly got comfortable with the plays.⁠

Last Friday at Hutchinson he continued the impact with the ball in his hands, taking a kickoff 70 yards back for a touchdown to tie the game early and later scoring on an 11-yard run to help seal the 36-27 road win. His versatility as a true multi-position athlete is a rare commodity, and he clearly shines when the ball is in his hands—whether giving Hall a reliable option on the ground or through the air, or taking returns the distance. The Mustang offense is starting to click at the right time, and Wise’s willingness to change positions midseason may be a big reason they get where they wanted to go all along.

Junior wide receiver King Anderson has quickly become a centerpiece of the Salina Central Mustangs’ passing attack. Through five games he has hauled in 37 receptions for 388 yards and 7 touchdowns, ranking among the AVCTL leaders in both catches and scores (tied for second in receiving touchdowns and leading in receptions through Week 5 per local rankings). Listed at 5'11", 170, the Class of 2028 receiver has shown the ability to create after the catch in the open field or stretch the field vertically with quick feet, agility, and above-average speed. He pairs reliable hands with strong downfield blocking and has been a consistent big-play threat for quarterback Griffin Hall—including multiple touchdowns in the Newton win and a second-quarter score in last Friday’s 36-27 road victory over Hutchinson. After Central graduated its top receivers from the 2025 championship team, Anderson has stepped up as a dynamic option the Mustangs can count on.

Junior Eli Kreighbaum (6'3", 210 lbs) has been one of Salina Central Mustangs Football most adaptable weapons this season, stepping into new roles—from linebacker to running back to receiver—as injuries and needs dictated. After providing a physical presence in the backfield earlier in the year, he has shifted more heavily into the receiving corps, where coach Mark Sandbo has called him a dangerous mismatch. Last Friday at Hutchinson, Kreighbaum caught a second-quarter touchdown from Griffin Hall that helped the Mustangs take a 20-14 lead into the half in a 36-27 road win. With back-to-back weeks now at the same position, the junior is getting the chance to settle in, find a rhythm, and show what he can do with more consistency.

When the conversation turns to the greatest quarterbacks to ever wear the Salina Central Mustang jersey, Griffin Hall’s name belongs at the top of the list. The 5’9” dual-threat signal-caller has done more than put up video-game numbers—he led the Mustangs to their first Class 5A state championship in 20 years as a junior, accounting for a school-record 38 touchdowns (29 through the air, 9 on the ground) while throwing for 1,827 yards and rushing for nearly 1,000 more with surgical accuracy and relentless toughness.⁠

That was just last year. Hall continues to do it day in and day out with with his arm, his legs, and an elite football mind that consistently puts the offense in the right situations under pressure. Coaches and opponents alike have watched him rewrite the standard for what a Central quarterback can be. Hall of Fame production. Championship pedigree. The best to ever do it in maroon and white.

This past Friday against Hutchinson, Hall went 21/28 for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also added 21 yards and 1 TD - a year low on the ground for Hall but truly a testament to the addition of RB Trae Wise.
