Why Wednesday: Coach RJ

Why is changing speeds and pace important?
The saying goes, “If you’re going fast all the time, you’re slow”. This is because even though you may be moving fast, you are easy to predict for the defense.

A great way to do this is mixing up the speeds of your pivots in the paint. Pivoting too quickly can be predictable, instead change your speed to create an unpredictable pattern to your game.

Let’s get better this week, MBT fam!

Monday Message: Coach Pat 🗣️

A great lesson not only for basketball, but for life: find ways to make the people around you better.

On the court, that might mean communicating on defense, encouraging a teammate after a mistake, or bringing the energy. Off the court, it can be as simple as helping someone who is struggling or setting a positive example through your actions.

Making others better does not take away from your own success. It strengthens the team and increases the value you bring to every group you are part of.

This week, challenge yourself to make someone around you better, whether that's a teammate, classmate, friend, or someone you've never met.

Better people create better environments. 1% better every day📈

Think the Game Thursday: Coach Evan 🔥

Basketball is just as mental as it is physical.

Today, Coach Evan broke down the footwork behind a drop stance and how players can use it to escape pressure, create space, and sell the defense.

Small details like foot placement, dribble timing, and changing speeds can make a huge difference. If your stance is too closed, the defender can stay in position and limit your options. If your timing is off, your move becomes predictable and the defense can react before you create an advantage.

That is why we teach the game beyond just the move itself. Players need to understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how it applies when a defender is actually in front of them.

At MBT, we want to focus on finding the little details that can hold players back and helping them master them so they feel natural in a game.

Why Wednesday: Rogers Edition 🏀

Why is relocation and spacing after a drive so important?

When a player drives, the defense is forced to help and recover. That creates closeouts and opportunities for teammates to attack after the kick out.

But if the original driver stands still after passing, the defense can help on the next drive while still staying attached. That makes the offense easier to guard.

At higher levels, players have to learn how to relocate and space away from the ball once the second drive happens. It gives their teammate room to attack, while also creating another scoring opportunity if the ball gets kicked back out.

At MBT, we train players to understand the read first; when to kick it, when to move, and how to make themselves available again through pushing, pulling, or cutting off the ball.

Smart movement = better spacing → Better spacing = smarter shots.

Monday Message: Coach Ian 🗣️

Bravery > Perfection

Coach Ian has played basketball at the college and professional levels, and one lesson that has stuck with him is the importance of focusing on the process rather than chasing perfection.

Basketball is full of imperfections. The players who keep growing are the ones who don't let failure control their mindset. It takes bravery to keep shooting, keep competing, and keep trusting your work when things don't go your way.
