I hopped on this morning for the usual Wonderland Running “check out this race, it’s so beautiful “ post. Instead I was met with yet another grim news flash of gun violence. Yet another American mass shooting data point, but this time right here in this cozy, friendly, beautiful Central Oregon community that we call home.
•
I am sad, exhausted, and angry. But that does not come close to what those overwhelmed and shattered people are feeling as they await news about their loved ones in an emergency room, or who will never again hold their child, or hear that special someone say their name.
•
I am sure in the coming days we will observe any mention of rational gun regulations swatted away, like bugs at a campfire, while in the same breath vaguely muttering that we need better mental health care. We will watch a significant swath of the political elite offer thoughts and prayers while doing ABSOLUTELY FU***NG NOTHING about either gun violence or mental health.
•
Before you jump on me with assumptions, I am a small “I” independent that fully supports responsible gun ownership. I do not want to come to your guns. I am grateful that the Constitution contains the Second Amendment, which by the way literally starts with the words “WELL REGULATED” FFS!
•
So yeah, this coming Election Day DO NOT give in to the idea that this is acceptable or inevitable. Pretty pretty please VOTE in this election and every election thereafter like someone’s children’s lives depended on meaningful action.
•
VOTE like their lives depended on officially recognizing that gun violence IS a public health crisis; that meaningful common sense regulation of fi****ms saves lives and communities; that mental health care is far too often expensive, inaccessible, or just nonexistent.
•
VOTE like these young children’s lives depended on it, and yet the people in power did absolutely fu***ng nothing to stop it. 💔

Today is Indigenous Day, but really, so is every single day. In a world where indigenous rights and history are still much too infrequently discussed, we do find utility and educational value in land acknowledgments. But we here at Wonderland Running needed to do something more than just words.
•
As such, we wish to remind you that Wonderland Running offers free registration to any and all of our races in perpetuity for Native American/Indigenous runners. This was long overdue; not just for Wonderland Running, but for trail racing and sport as a whole.
•
For us and other organizations holding events on public lands, especially for-profit events, it is time to reflect on what it would take to move beyond words and toward actions. What are some actions you could take for Native American Heritage Month?
•
Please feel to reach out to us (email or DM) for details, questions, and so forth regarding Wonderland Running’s registration policy. Thank you and be well.

The inaugural Oregon Outback 230 family is growing… getting close to half full! Join us now for the race that dreams are made of! Registration is $1,645 until January 1st on UltraSignup 🌅🌌🌄
•
The Oregon Outback 230 is a point-to-point adventure through the immensely vast and beautiful wildscapes deep within Central Oregon. This is a land as lovely as it is lonely; where the ancient volcanic arc of the Eastern Cascades gives way to the sage-scented solitude of the Basin & Range.
•
There are few places left in the world that offer the sense of solitude that the Oregon Outback provides. You will be woven into the tapestry of birth, life, death, and renewal in a way that cannot be described, only felt. The Oregon Outback is also the largest designated International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world!
•
The course primarily uses the Fremont & Crane Mountain National Recreation Trails. They traverse along extensive, dramatic fault-block rims that characterize the Basin & Range geology. Winter Rim, Abert Rim, and the Warner Mountains rise precipitously above large pluvial lakes and desert playas thousands of feet beneath you.
•
The Dates:
Registration Closes: July 1, 2027
The Race: July 16-21, 2027
•
The Numbers:
Mileage: 230.83 miles
Gain: 30,810 feet
Loss: 31,016 feet
Lowest Elevation: 4,704 feet
Highest Elevation: 8,348 feet
Total course cutoff: 120 hours (5 days)
•
We are also excited to be holding our pre-race festivities at Summer Lake Hot Springs a gem of the Oregon Outback!
•
A significant percentage of the proceeds from this race will go to the Oregon Timber Trail® Alliance in support of their efforts to connect trails, communities, and opportunities in this beautiful part of the world.
•
We look forward to seeing you next summer for this transformational journey through one of the last great wild landscapes on Earth!

2026 Dark Divide Trail Races:
My gas tank might be well below empty, but my heart and spirit have never been so full.
•
Results are live on Ultrasignup. Other communications will be forthcoming this week. It will take me at least a couple of days to wrap up things up here in the Dark Divide, catch up with something resembling regular sleep, and just process the last few weeks.
•
In the meantime, please know how much this endlessly vast, wild, rugged, and endlessly beautiful place & the weirdest, most inspirational, and lovely community of humans I have ever known all mean to me. You are the most powerful medicine I have in my life. Thank you so much for being a treasured part of the Dark Divide Trail Races family!

Dark Divide 100 goes down this Friday.

Prepare your soul… 🏔️ 🤝

The Dark Divide 100 Miler is back September 4 through 6, 2026, and it is everything you’ve heard and more.

70,000+ acres of the wildest, most remote country in the Washington Cascades. Steep technical trails, sub-alpine ridges painted with wildflowers, centuries-old trees, tumbling waterfalls, and glaciated volcanoes so close it feels like you could touch them.

This is not a beginner ultra. It may be the hardest thing you ever do, and one of the most beautiful places you ever get to run.

And the news keeps getting better. The Dark Divide 100 Miler is now an official Hardrock 100 Qualifier, with brand new one-of-a-kind cash prizes on the table: $2,000 for breakthrough sub-24 and sub-20 finishes and $10,000 for the first runners to finish five Dark Divides.

Prefer a shorter adventure? There’s a challenging 100K on Saturday (note: 100K runners and crew handle their own transportation to and from Wright Meadow and Cispus Learning Center), plus the 50K and 14 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, September 7. All start and finish at the Cispus Learning Center near Randle, WA, with bunkhouses, showers, and camping right there.

Seldom-traveled. Soul-stirring. Life-changing. The West’s wildest 100 is waiting.

Spots are limited and qualification standards apply for the 100. Learn more and secure your spot at the link below on !
