Michigan Satellite Referee Academy

Starting this fall the Michigan Referee Program is launching a new initiative to increase referee mentorship and exposure to referee mentors and coaches by hosting satellite referee academies at local tournaments. Local DDRD’s will pick a tournament to host the academy and the MRC will send a coach to join the mentors and officials. If you are interested in joining one of these academies, contact your local DDRD.

Lansing District: September 19th, Autumn Soccer Classic, Andrew Hoard Referee Coach

Kalamazoo District: September 19th, Kingdom Cup, Brad Heers Referee Coach

Over the weekend, the Michigan Referee Program hosted its end of summer roadshow events in Grand Rapids, Berrien Springs, and East Lansing! Instructors included Carlos Folino, Ron Grobbel, Andrew Hoard, and Steve Arends. We discussed the new Laws of the Game, management of the technical areas, and the MRC Referee pathway. Thank you to all the referees who joined us!

The Mid-Michigan District hosted an in-person referee training session recently at the Midland Soccer Complex. Over 30 referees, including many brand new referees, gathered to learn about the new laws and technical area management. Instructors were Mid-Michigan District Director of Referee Development Michael Gage, Matt Krause, and Amy Willing.

Earlier this month Michigan hosted the USL2 Final between Vermont Green and Flint City Bucks at Atwood Stadium in Flint. Thank you to our referee friends who traveled in to work they match and to our own Nichole Kramer-Kiuchi for working as the referee coach on the match.

This weekend as a part of the NASO Sports Officiating Summit behind held in Grand Rapids, the MHSAA hosted Officiate Michigan Day. More than 1,000 sports officials were on hand Saturday to hear perspectives from all levels of sports from youth to the top professional leagues in the United States.

During lunch, Nichole Kramer-Kiuchi represented the Michigan Referee Program in leading a soccer breakout session. Her talk focused on the importance of self-reflection as well as how to evaluate your own performances with and without video clips.
