Point to La Pointe Open Water Swim

Point to La Pointe Open Water Swim The P2LP Swim is a 2.1 mile swim across Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island. Point to LaPointe started as a community swim for 24 people in 2006.

Swimming to the island has been a storied feat around the Bayfield area for decades. The event is now a race featuring more than 400 participants. Swimmers have encountered all of Lake Superior's moods over the years, from calm, flat water to strong crosswinds with 2 foot waves. The course follows the path of the winter "ice road", starting in Bayfield and landing at a beautiful family home on Mad

eline Island. Spectators take the ferry across which offers views of the race. The event is a fundraiser for swim programs at the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Casual swimmers can still enter the non-competitive event and use fins, etc.

How is the race course marked?

Large buoys are placed every 1/4 mile. Swimmers need to stay within a 50 foot channel marked by safety kayakers.

New to open water swimming? Make sure you're practicing sighting!

Hellllo Swimmers and Supporters!

We're looking for volunteers to help make race day amazing. Swimmers often have fun on Friday passing out hoodies or helping sell mech. Spectators can help Saturday morning with uhaul loading, passing out food to swimmers, cleaning up the beach and more! Boat and kayak volunteers needed too! It takes hundred of volunteer hours to make the event successful and it's a fun way to be involved in the event. bayfieldrec.org/point-to-la-pointe
