People from outside this area sometimes think Wisconsin is just cheese, farms, football, and highways. But to those of us who live along this big water, this is Wisconsin. This is Lake Superior. This is Red Cliff. This is the Apostle Islands. 🌲🌊

Off the shores of the Red Cliff Reservation, in the heart of the Apostle Islands, crystal-clear freshwater stretches so far it feels like an ocean. Red sandstone shoreline rises from the lake. Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave everything for this country.

As a Native Veteran-owned family business, Memorial Day carries deep meaning for us. It is a day to remember sacrifice, hold gratitude in our hearts, and recognize that the freedoms we enjoy came at a cost paid by others.

Here on the shores of **Lake Superior**, we are reminded how precious peace is — the quiet water, the morning light, family, community, and the blessing of another day. Being able to paddle these waters, like those before us did, and share that experience with others is something we are truly grateful for.

From all of us at Apostle Islands Rustic Makwa Den, we remember, we honor, and we thank those who never made it home.

Ahh yep we all deal with that no doubt.

Being a manager isn’t always easy😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
We carry the stress no one sees, make decisions that won’t make everyone happy, and still show up every day trying to keep everything running smoothly. 🌊🌊 🌊

People don’t always realize how much pressure is behind the scenes; covering shifts, solving problems, handling complaints, keeping employees motivated, managing costs, and still trying to create a positive environment for both staff and customers.

Some days we’re exhausted mentally before the day even starts. We care deeply about our team and our business, but being the person everyone depends on gets heavy.

Managers aren’t perfect. We’re human too. ✨We learn as we go, make sacrifices, and do our best to balance compassion with accountability.

So to all the managers out there or even MOMagers quietly holding everything together…..you’re doing better than you think. 🌟 Keep going.💫

I wanted to share something from my heart, not to point fingers or make anyone feel bad, but because it has honestly been weighing on me and I believe that by sharing it in a good way, we can uplift and inspire each other.

Apostle Islands Rustic Makwa Den is more than a kayak business to our family. It is a dream we have poured our hearts, time, energy, and prayers into. We are committed to building something that represents Red Cliff, Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands, and our people with respect and dignity, while also bringing our community together.

We are proud to be a Native Veteran-owned family business. We are passionate about creating opportunities, offering safe outdoor experiences, bringing visitors to our area, and showcasing the breathtaking beauty of our shoreline. We are doing our best to build something that will inspire our kids and future generations to be proud of who they are and where they come from.

I will be honest — sometimes it can feel discouraging when you are working hard to build something positive in your own community and you hope for a little more visibility and support. I do not say that with anger or resentment. I say it with hope, love, and a deep desire to see our community continue finding ways to lift up local Native-owned and Veteran-owned businesses.

We do not expect special treatment. But we do believe that a simple share, a kind word, or a little encouragement from our leaders, neighbors, family, and community can be a powerful blessing for small businesses trying to grow.
