The 34th year of youth baseball at Mansfield Stadium ended last night. Old Town beat Hampden for the Jr. American Legion state championship. We hosted 46 games in 30 days in July. We hosted 84 games in the last 50 days of the season. A special thank you goes to all the people who made it possible. The concession workers and the grounds crew practically live at the ball field from mid June to the first week in August. We also appreciate the support we get from the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department. Our friends at the golf course are also always helpful with letting us use some of their specialized equipment when needed.
Now that the work of getting the field ready for next year begins. Aerating, thatching, sweeping the turf, topdressing with sand, inspecting and repairing sprinkler heads, fertilizing, edging the grass, painting around the stadium, repairing fences and the batting cage, will be done between now and the end of October.
God willing, I hope to be back for my 35th year as volunteer field director in 2026. I can only do it with the perennial help of Seth Stacey, Derek Fournier, Zach Cowperthwaite, Adam Fournier and Troy Lare. Without this special group, and a few college students every summer, Mansfield Stadium would not look and play the way it does.
Thank you everyone for another successful summer.
