HEAL: Pilates

HEAL: Pilates HEAL: Pilates is a full-service boutique Pilates studio. We teach private, group reformer, and mat classes in person and online.

We specialize in rehabilitation and also love challenging our fitness-focused clients to achieve their goals. Ayanna Makalani, owner of HEAL: Pilates, spent her childhood competing as a gymnast and turned to modern dance in college. Introduced to Pilates during rehabilitation for knee surgery, she found it to be the most effective therapy for her: not only did it stabilize and strengthen her knee,

it also guided her back into her body with patience and understanding. She draws on that experience, and her years of training, to offer her clients the same kinesthetic insight. Ayanna holds a BA in Theater from UCLA; she is a certified instructor through BASI-Body Arts and Science International, and has been teaching Pilates since 2007. Ayanna believes that everyone, at every level of physical ability, will discover something new and deeper from the practice of Pilates and that its focused and precise approach creates greater awareness, facilitates healing, and produces the most sustained and energizing changes in the body.

🔸Explain the relationship between breathing, pressure management, movement, and pelvic floor function.

🔸Identify the muscles of the abdominal wall and deep core system and interpret real-time ultrasound images demonstrating common motor patterns.

🔸Recognize common pelvic floor symptoms and determine when referral to a pelvic health provider is appropriate.

🔸Modify Pilates exercises and programming considerations for common pelvic health concerns.

🔸Apply evidence-informed cueing strategies that support pelvic floor function and motor learning.

🔸Identify common cueing practices that may unintentionally promote fear of movement, excessive bracing, or muscle guarding.

🔸Differentiate common myths from current evidence regarding pelvic floor function, pressure management, and core activation.

Asia will be teaching Group Reformer classes Mondays at 6 PM and Saturdays at 10 AM starting 9/14! She’ll also be available for private lessons!

🌸 ABOUT ASIA 🌸

Asia was always interested in fitness and ran track growing up. After exploring different forms of exercise, she found herself drawn to Pilates because it challenged her both physically and mentally. She loved how movements that appeared simple required strength, control, concentration, and a deeper awareness of her body. As she became more consistent with her practice, Pilates became more than a workout. It helped her with joint pain and stiffness & became a space where she could slow down, reconnect with herself, and appreciate what her body was capable of.

As her love for Pilates grew, Asia became curious about what was happening beyond the movements themselves. She wanted to understand the purpose behind each exercise, how the body works, and how Pilates could be adapted to meet people where they are. That curiosity eventually led her to starting Santa Rosa Junior College’s Pilates Comprehensive Instructor Certification.

Becoming a teacher has given Asia an entirely new appreciation for the practice. She enjoys creating an environment where clients can challenge themselves without feeling intimidated or feeling like they have to already be “good” at Pilates. She believes movement should help people feel stronger and more confident in their bodies.

For Asia, teaching Pilates is the beginning of a larger journey in movement and wellness. She continues to expand her education and experience while developing her own teaching style, with an emphasis on intentional movement, strength, body awareness, and making Pilates feel approachable for everyone.

We had a super fun educational moment after our staff meeting last weekend! Dr. Rebecca Redman OTD, OTR/L, CPT | SOFT POWER (one of our instructors that just so happens to be a pelvic floor therapist) brought in an ultrasound probe and we got to nerd out & look at some anatomy 🧠🩻

It was really wonderful to get all the staff together (instructors & administrative) as we haven’t had a chance to much this year 💕

I have a new client that has a workbook on the Pilates Reformer and is super interested in learning specific exercises. One of them was the Semi-Circle. When I first got certified I didn’t really feel much doing this exercise or find it that interesting + the flow is a bit awkward. But since he wanted to learn more about it, I played with it the other day and found the spice to it. I still feel like you can proooooobably just do bridging & feel most of what the Semi-Circle offers, BUT It was definitely fun to drop my t**h 🍑 in the pilates well. 🤣

…maybe I’ll start a new vid series called dusting off old certification exercises that I had written off and finding their magic 🤔🪄
