Hanabi Judo

Hanabi Judo A part of the Berkeley and Albany community for 60 years, Hanabi Judo offers classes for all. Our goal is to become a healthy and fun part of your life.

Judo, meaning “The Gentle Way,” is a very effective means of self-defense while being a safe, non-violent way of controlling an opponent. Judo emphasizes throwing techniques and ground-work but also features chokes and arm-locks. Judo is an Olympic event and the world’s second most popular sport (behind soccer). Hanabi means "Fireworks" in Japanese and its energy, brightness and excitement truly e

xpress the spirit of our judo. For almost half a century we have been a part of the Albany and Berkeley community developing not just champions but good people of strength and character. We have produced over a hundred state, national, and international champions, but most of our members don’t actually compete but simply enjoy working out and learning in our friendly atmosphere. From beginning classes to family judo, women’s judo to kata, we have classes of various levels for children and adults alike. You can join us at any time. Regular promotional exams will have you going from white belt to yellow and, hopefully, all the way to black. Friends and family are always welcome to watch. We also offer Judo & Japanese Culture Summer Camp, which is an adventure in physical and cultural education for children from 5 to 14. Please see our website for more information!

Summer National Results

15 Hanabi Students competed at the Summer Nationals in San Francisco this past weekend and 14 came back with medals. (The only person who missed out lost to his Hanabi teammate for third place.) In fact our kids did so well that, out of 58 clubs in attendance, Hanabi had the 3rd best results! And we had fewer students than the clubs above us. Our amazing performance was led by Harper, Luca, Keiden, Kai K., Shuhan and Raangzen; these 6 athletes won all of their matches to earn gold medals. Special thanks to our parents. Congratulations to all!

Special Visitor: Tomohiro Ishikawa

Hanabi was lucky to have Tomohiro Ishikawa Sensei visit us this past week from Japan. While Japan is the home of many, many elite judo players only a selected few go on to become professionals. Ishikawa Sensei is a member of Toyota’s professional judo team, one of the strongest in Japan. Ishikawa taught us his own style of Osoto Gari, his “tokui waza,” or favorite technique. Thank you for visiting Hanabi!
