Thames Valley Rugby mourns the sudden passing of a true legend of our game, Swamp Fox #424 Terence Edward “Terry” Shaw, who passed away on 24 October 2026, aged 89.
Terry’s name will forever be etched into the history of our province, remembered for one of the greatest moments in Thames Valley rugby history.
Representing the Swamp Foxes from 1957 to 1966, Terry made 65 appearances and scored 279 points, establishing himself as an outstanding fullback and an important figure in our province’s proud rugby history.
His defining moment came in September 1962 at Boyd Park, Te Aroha, when Thames Valley took on the touring Australian Wallabies. Down to 14 men for almost the entire match, the Valley fought courageously against one of the world’s best sides.
With the game hanging in the balance, Terry stepped up and struck a remarkable 40-metre drop goal to secure a historic 16–14 victory. A moment of individual brilliance that became part of Thames Valley folklore and a legacy that will never be forgotten.
Terry’s contribution to our province went far beyond the numbers. He was part of a special era in Thames Valley Rugby, and his place in our history will remain forever.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Terry’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Thank you, Terry, for the memories, the moments and the legacy you leave behind.
Once a Swamp Fox, always a Swamp Fox.
