Rounding out our Under 21's coaching group, and back for his second year is Willem Poolman.
Originally from a small farming town in South Africa, Willem grew up immersed in sport, playing rugby through 1st XV, University, Premier and representative level, predominantly at centre, wing and fullback, before life eventually brought him and his family to New Zealand.
Te Awamutu has been home for the past 15 years, with Willem farming locally and his two boys coming through Te Awamutu Sports junior rugby and Te Awamutu College. His own coaching journey followed them, spending around 10 years coaching across different levels of College rugby before moving into the senior game.
For the Colts, Willem will lead our defence and analysis, using video and observation to support how we understand the game, while bringing his considerable playing and coaching experience to the group.
At the heart of Willem's coaching are connection, confidence and a really high level of care for the individual. He takes the time to understand what makes players tick, build relationships and support them to find the confidence to express themselves. That care strongly complements Carl's people-first coaching philosophy and the environment we're working to create around this group.
