Daniel Kits completed his competition at the Oceania Athletics Champs on a high note with a silver medal in the 1500m.
It's a tough gig heading to an event like this having not raced for over two months, having to contend with temps above 30 in the day and only dropping to mid 20s overnight, and whilst it was a six day event his races came on consecutive days.

First up was his 400m where he ran 66.89 to make the final, run a few hours later, where he was 7th in 68.03 (74.15%).

Next was the 800 where he was 4th in 2.31 (77.59) and then finally the 1500 where his time was 5.25.39 (73.23%).

Whilst proud to represent NZ and win a medal, Daniel was disappointed not to run any PBs. But as mentioned above there was some good reasons for that. A great experience and now time for a couple of weeks well earned break.

Cross-Country Training: Level Up Your Season! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

XC season is officially underway! Whether you are at Intermediate or College, it’s the perfect time to sharpen your fitness for upcoming school and inter-school events.

Many of you will be balancing winter team sports and school commitments so how training may look will depend on the individual—ranging from personalized weekly plans to group runs.

For Winter Athletes: XC training will help build durability, and speed up recovery times on and off the field giving you an edge on the pitch.

For Summer Specialists: Use the winter to build a massive cardio base for the upcoming track season, particularily the Colgate Games (U14), and NZ Secondary Schools which are early in the season.

As summer approaches, our focus will shift toward more specific workouts tailored to your individual track goals.

Key Dates to Circle:
* June 3: Waikato SS XC
* June 10: Waikato/BOP SS XC
* June 12: TAI Interhouse XC (Updated Date)
* June 20–21: NZSS XC
* Aug 11: WIMS XC
* Sep 6: AIMS Games XC
* Nov 26–28: NZSS Athletics (Whanganui)

Daniel Kits is off to the Oceania Champs in Darwin tomorrow where he will compete for NZ in the 400, 800 and 1500m.
He will also undergo an international assessment of his disabilities to determine his para classification, which is in itself quite a workout.

We wish you all the best Daniel.

The photo is from the Cooks Classic meet in Wanganui in January where Daniel first got to wear the silver fern as part of the NZ Secondary Schools team as he competed in the national Mile championships.

Hamon and brother Jethro Mckay (old boy TAAC runner and holder of 7yo 200m and 10yo 1500 club records) competed in the 2nd race of Waikato Orienteering's Rugged Rogain series over the weekend.
Rogain is a variation of orienteering where teams or individuals find as many controls (check points) as they can in a set amount of time. Controls are worth different points so strategy is involved and can't be late back as points are rapidly deducted by the minute.
Hamon and Jethro competed in the 4 hr race and came in second after being deducted 20 points from 1st equal for being 7 seconds late.
Being new to the Rogain scene meant this wasn't the only strategic error they made but that's what makes it interesting, and a good way to keep some variation in their Sunday long runs.
Rogains are suitable for all ages and abilities, often with family teams, and are a great way to see the Waikato countryside.
