There’s plenty to see and do along the way, t

oo, whether you’re into scenery, history, galleries and cafes, or fancy a detour into Wairarapa wine country. It can be ridden in either direction, but is usually started in Petone and takes 2–3 days to complete. See the official website for details www.remutakacycletrail.com

June is a BUSY month for trail maintenance! If you're planning a visit, here are some important updates about the areas that will be getting some TLC in the coming weeks:

- Hutt River Trail section at 'Taita Gorge': installing a new culvert and widening the trail. There will be a diversion along the footpath next to Eastern Hutt Rd from 4th to 19th June.

- Remutaka Rail Trail section: trimming back vegetation between Summit and the Cross Creek carpark. There may be Stop/Go signs in place at times, so please follow the signage.

- Wild Coast Track section: grading the Kotumu Fan 4th - 12th June. A Stop/Go will be in place.

Thank you for your patience and support while we work to keep our trails in excellent condition.

If you live in Wellington, no doubt you've already tried out Te Ara Tupua (or plan to very soon!).
For those outside of Wellington, the excitement is real - we now have an outstanding route between Wellington city and Petone foreshore (the official start of the Remutaka Cycle Trail) - with best-in-class separated cycle lanes all the way from Wellington Railway station to the new Te Ara Tupua. (... and with RCT, mostly off-road to Featherston!!)
Not only is it safe, purpose-built, and with a stunning backdrop, Te Ara Tupua is beautiful. Thank you to everyone involved in this project!

Yipee!! More details coming - Stay Tuned as we keep you updated on the work coming up. Some work will be getting underway very soon!!

Some Thursday good news - the Wild Coast section of the Remutaka Cycle Trail is receiving $165,000 in funding for an upgrade!

The Remutaka Cycle Trail is 122km long and is made up of four sections - the Hutt River Trail section, the Rail Trail section, the Western Lake Road section and the Wild Coast section which runs from the Coast in Wainuiomata to Ocean Beach in the Wairarapa.

The Wild Coast section is the “jewel in the crown” of the wider Cycle Trail and a key drawcard for visitors. After more than 11 years of use, the exposed coastal track is increasingly affected by erosion, rockfall risk, and surface degradation, so this funding is very welcome.

UPDATE 29th April - temporary fix is in place. See updated photo in comments.
Storm damage - a culvert on the Hutt River Trail section was blown out in the heavy rains earlier this week. Locally known as Taita Gorge, this culvert is at the bottom of the narrow section by the river, below Eastern Hutt Rd (just north of the Stokes Valley roundabout). Two (normally benign) stormwater drains flow over a small ford in the trail.
The photos below show how it used to look, and how it is now. Be prepared to dismount when you see the Flooding sign, and carefully cross on the temporary rocky track. Avoid the flood waters. Thanks to Greater Wellington, which is assessing the damage and working on a long-term solution.

The Hutt River Trail section of RCT is now diverted around the eastern side of the Harvey Norman building, just south of the Melling bridge. This diversion will be in place for some time, while a replacement bridge is being built. Congratulations Te Awa Kairangi - Delivering RiverLink on a quality diversion. RCT signs are coming soon, in the meantime, follow the orange signs to stay on the RCT trail.

The Wild Coast Track section of the Remutaka Cycle Trail takes you around Turakirae Head (see last photo in the post below). This section is now officially open again, and is rated Grade 4 (advanced). Mountain bikes are recommended. Due to the slip 1.5km near Corner Creek, a 200m walk on the beach is needed, so please time your journey to avoid high tides and rough weather.
