🤝 Coach Spotlight
Gary Szabo runs Tsunami Southern Tribes Waiwhakaiho and brings a clear, thoughtful approach to jiu jitsu and to people.
For Gary, winning starts with pattern recognition and fast decision making, seeing what is happening and responding before the moment is gone. Most matches, in his view, are still decided by solid fundamentals done well.
His philosophy is simple and honest. Control before submission, because if something fails you are still in position to learn, adjust, and try again. He believes new athletes progress faster when they stop trying to win every round and start focusing on learning, improving, and supporting the team around them.
Gary reminds his athletes that jiu jitsu is a team sport. We look after each other, on the mats and off them. Great competitors, in his eyes, are not afraid to lose, stay curious, and are willing to be a white belt for life.
What he loves most about coaching in Aotearoa is the transformation. The bullied finding confidence, the quiet finding connection, and young people learning focus and discipline. For Gary, that journey is what makes jiu jitsu and this community so special.

Matua Pina is getting a limited number of graffiti patch tees done. I have already ordered them & printing has started. These are coming from Matua John so I’m not getting extras. Adults sizing from S to 3XL.
$80 a tee, I’m paying in USD+freight+Insurance.
