Kia ora e te whanau,

Hamilton Star University Cricket Club is very sad to announce the sudden passing earlier this week of our President, Dr Stuart Pilling.

Stuart had a long involvement with the club, dating back more than 30 years, including as a Premier player during his playing career.

He was a life member of Hamilton Star University Cricket Club.

Stu had been a constant presence on the club board for at least 20 of those years. In 2017 his service to the club was acknowledged and celebrated with a University of Waikato sports blazer.

Much of his contribution was strategic advice on management of the club’s affairs and growth. He was particularly focussed on development of women’s and junior cricket as ways to involve more people with our club and our great sport.

More recently Stuart had held key roles as treasurer and president, closely managing the club’s finances and affairs.

He was known for his intellect, attention to detail and willingness to challenge stakeholders around their decisions and management of the game locally.

We will share more details on a service for Stuart as they come to hand.

The Board is supporting Stuart's family as needed, and also filling the significant gap he has left in our club and the management of its ongoing affairs.

Kua whetūrangitia koe, Stu.

("You have become a star.")

We held our junior club prizegiving on Easter Friday, coinciding with our senior Premier men's team appearing in the three-day Howden Cup final at Seddon Park.

This summer we fielded five teams across the Hamilton Cricket Association junior softball and hardball competitions - three teams in competitive hardball leagues on Saturday mornings, and two teams in participation-focussed softball grades on Friday nights.

Our hardball teams had a particularly strong finish to the season, winning all but one match in Term 1 - and that single loss went right down to final delivery!

Our junior program has grown from five children four summers ago to nearly 50 kids this season! We're stoked to have so many families involved.

A special thanks to the parents who managed and coached our junior teams over the last seven months.

Our little cricketers take a break for a few months, and we expect to get organised winter training underway in June.

You can send a message to our page if you'd like to get a kid into cricket for next season - we're always welcoming more players.

Umbrellas on a cricket ground is rarely a good sign.

Slow gentle drizzle at Seddon Park half an hour from the scheduled start of play on Day 3 in the Howden Cup Final. The players are in the changing rooms.

A start on time looks very unlikely. Showers forecast throughout the day.

Star will resume at 1-85 when - or if - play gets underway. Finn Kay 33* and Aman Awasthi 42*.
