Southern Football is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Life Member Rab Smith.

Rab was a passionate advocate for football across Otago and Southland, dedicating countless hours to promoting, documenting and preserving the stories of our game. Through his writing, photography and tireless support of football at all levels, Rab became a familiar and respected figure throughout the southern football community.

For many years, Rab captured the moments that mattered — from junior football and local club competitions through to regional and national fixtures. His commitment to telling the stories of players, coaches, referees and volunteers helped celebrate the people who make football special and ensured that the history of our game in the South was preserved for future generations.

Rab's contribution to football extended far beyond the touchline. His knowledge, passion and unwavering support for the game earned him the respect and friendship of countless people across the football community and saw him recognised as a Life Member of Southern Football.

On behalf of Southern Football, we extend our sincere condolences to Rab's family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rab's legacy will live on through the memories he helped create, the stories he told and the lasting impact he made on football in the South.

Rest in peace, Rab.

Massive congratulations to Tessa Nicol on an incredible achievement becoming the first ever female in Oceania to complete the OFC/NZF Goalkeeper B Licence.

A fantastic milestone for Tessa and for the growth of women in football and goalkeeping development across Aotearoa and Oceania. Awesome to see your mahi and passion recognised on this pathway!

Tessa Nicol has become the first ever female in Oceania to complete the OFC/NZF Goalkeeper B Licence 👏

Tessa is a familiar face in football in New Zealand, being a former New Zealand U-17 and U-20 Women’s Goalkeeper Coach.

"My hope is to see more women over the next few years come through the advanced goalkeeping development pathway and filtering into our academies, professional clubs, and national pathways."

The OFC/NZF Goalkeeper B Licence is designed for coaches working with senior and older youth goalkeepers. It aims to challenge and support aspiring GK coaches with the tools and knowledge needed to better support their players.
