A Lifetime of Darfield Rugby: John Creamer Steps Down as Club Patron
After 81 consecutive seasons of involvement with Darfield Rugby Football Club, Mr John Creamer is stepping down from his role as Club Patron at the age of 98.
Despite the club’s best efforts to convince him to stay on, John has decided the time is right to step aside. His contribution to Darfield Rugby spans generations, and it is difficult to put into words just how much he has given to the club over the years.
John’s rugby journey began in 1946, as the Malvern competition was getting underway again following the end of the Second World War. John played for Darfield in the Men’s Junior grade, the equivalent of today’s Division 2. The team was a mix of young players looking to make their mark and more senior players nearing the end of their playing careers.
John went on to make the Darfield senior team in 1949 and became part of a successful side that dominated the Malvern Shield throughout the 1950s, winning it every year bar one. These early years helped cement John’s place in the club and began a connection that would continue for more than eight decades.
From those early playing days, John went on to hold almost every position within the club, including Treasurer, Secretary, Club Captain and President, serving as President from 1956 to 1959. He has coached, refereed, supported players and families, and been involved in just about every aspect of club life.
In 1994, John became the club’s third Patron, taking over from the late Jock Dawson. He has held the position for 32 years, providing a constant connection to the club’s history and the many generations of players who have worn the Darfield jersey.
Throughout his time as Patron, John has been there to mark some important milestones in the club’s history. These include the opening of the clubroom extension in 1994, the changing sheds and clubroom deck extension in 2015, and the kitchen extension in 2022. Each of these developments has helped improve the facilities for players, members and the wider club community.
John’s contribution to preserving the club’s history has been just as important. For the club’s centenary in 2004, John put together a booklet documenting Darfield Rugby Club’s history, helping preserve the stories and people that have shaped the club over the years.
John’s connection to Darfield Rugby is also a family one. Over the years, he has watched his own children and grandchildren come through the club, from the junior grades through to senior rugby. Rugby has been a part of his family for generations, making his 81-year connection to Darfield Rugby even more special.
As John steps down from the Patron role, the club is pleased to welcome Grant McIlroy as its new Patron.
Grant has been involved with Darfield Rugby since 1991 and has made his own significant contribution over the past 35 years. His involvement has included coaching, serving on the club committee and holding the position of President from 2001 to 2002.
Rugby has also been a big part of the McIlroy family, with three members of the family having served as Club President: Grant (2001–2002), his son Scott McIlroy (2018–2019), and his daughter-in-law Kelly McIlroy, who became the current Club President in 2026.
All three of Grant’s sons have come through the junior and senior grades, and two of his grandchildren continue to play for Darfield Rugby today.
The appointment of Grant as Patron recognises his longstanding commitment to the club and the McIlroy family’s ongoing connection with Darfield Rugby.
While John may be stepping away from the Patron role, he certainly won’t be stepping away from the club. He will continue to be an avid supporter of Darfield Rugby Football Club, and we look forward to seeing him around the grounds.
