I started competitive athletics when I was 16 yrs old after running in my younger days

for Western Suburbs. Near the end of my first season after winning Auckland C**t Sprint Titles I was introduced to Coach Russ Hoggard who took me into his training squad. From there I progressed well to become NZ Junior 400m Champ and NZ Junior 100m record holder. As a senior athlete I won my first NZ 100m title in 1973, then again in 1975 and 1977. In 1977 I also won the NZ 200m title and set the NZ 100m record of 10.4. Unfortunately serious ill health prevented me competing in 1974, 1976 and 1978. All Commonwealth or Olympic Games years of competition, however I did represent NZ every year I competed and my highlight was making the World Cup team in 1977 to Germany and Coach Russ Hoggard was also part of the management team which was great to have your coach touring with you. In 2000 I set up a training school for sprinting based at Mt Smart and over the next 4yrs helped many young athletes improve their running mechanics and over all speed. Many of these athletes went on to win Auckland or NZ titles and represent their country in their chosen events and are still competing at present I was then invited by Russ to join the Development training squad at the Bays and my daughter Jenna and I crossed the bridge to become part of the bays family which we are both enjoying considerably and look forward to a continued close association. I get immense enjoyment and pride being part of my athlete’s progress and admire their dedication and commitment to their sport and their attempt in vain to get me to learn the correct words to the song Iam trying to sing. Other Coaching Achievements. An original sporting photo from the past popped up yesterday. It was taken in the January of 1977 and shows from left to right Hasley Crawford (Trinidad Tobago) Olympic 100m Champion 1976, Don Quarry (Jamaica) Olympic 200m Champion 1976, Alan Wells (Scotland) Olympic 100m Champion 1980 and myself exploding of the starting blocks at the start of a 100m sprint. Great memories from some 49yrs ago 😎

An athletes bond with their coach is so very important. We both share in the athletes improvements and successes, on the flip side I also believe their athletes failures to some extent are a reflection of their coaching 🏃‍♀️🏃🏿

Huge congratulations to my 7yr old granddaughter Madison Rae, who on Saturday at her Glen Eden athletic clubs championships broke the 7yr girls 60 meter record with an outstanding time of 9.21 seconds. As a footnote that makes 3 generations of our family who now still hold current track records at the Glen Eden Club, spanning over 35yrs. I feel very few athletic clubs in NZ could equal that result. So pleased Club Chairman Neil has had the honour of recording all our families records at the Glen Eden Club over the last 35+ years. Great job mate Steve 👏😎
