One is a snapshot. The other follows the mare over time. Neither test is automatically better.

An IBOP assesses a mare on a single test day, after preparation in her familiar training environment. During an EPTM, the jury follows her through a longer training period and can see how she responds, learns and develops.

The right route depends on the individual mare: her maturity, preparation and readiness for the work. The aim is to choose the test that gives the most representative picture of her ability and potential.

Understanding the sample is just as important as collecting it. 🔬🐴

Today at Maverick, we’re collecting a manure sample for faecal testing.

Faecal egg counts help us monitor parasite egg shedding, but they cannot detect every parasite or life stage. A low count does not automatically mean a horse is parasite-free.

We interpret results alongside each horse’s age, grazing history, previous treatments and seasonal risks, with veterinary guidance.

APPARENTLY, FENCES ARE OPTIONAL IN THIS FAMILY. 🤭🐴

Some family traditions are a little more challenging than others…

On April 14, at just six weeks old, Wiarado Maverick decided that the 1.30 m fence wasn’t going to stop him from following his biological mother, Hendence VDL.

One impressive little jump later, he was exactly where he wanted to be.

His recipient mare, however, wasn’t quite as impressed.😂

And the funny thing? Every foal out of Hendence VDL has managed to jump over the fencing at a young age.

At this point, we’re beginning to think it’s a family tradition. Apparently, staying on the right side of the fence simply doesn’t run in this family.

While we certainly appreciate their enthusiasm for jumping, we’d much rather they stayed in the field we actually put them in. 🤭🐴

Like mother, like offspring. 🖤

WHY DO WE CHOOSE KWPN?

For us, choosing a studbook is not simply about a name on a pedigree. It is about the framework behind every breeding decision.

The KWPN predicate system makes different forms of evidence visible—from conformation and health to sport performance and the quality of offspring. This helps us look beyond famous names and consider what a horse and its family have actually demonstrated.

We also value KWPN’s open studbook policy. It allows carefully selected bloodlines from outside the population to be considered, creating opportunities for outcrosses and helping us manage relatedness and inbreeding.

Our goal is not only to breed a good foal next year. We want future generations to remain healthy, functional and breedable twenty years from now.

Selection also continues over time. A young stallion that is not approved at three is not necessarily excluded forever. When talent is supported by later development, health and sport performance, the door can still open—as Party in de Hus demonstrates.

KWPN gives us information, context and transparency. The final breeding decision remains ours.

Breed for today. Protect tomorrow.

AUTUMN MANAGEMENT STARTS BEFORE THE SEASON FULLY CHANGES.

September brings cooler nights, warmer afternoons, shorter days and new risks in and around the pastures.

At Maverick Stables, this means paying closer attention to what changes around our horses:

• checking areas around oak and sycamore trees;
• preventing horses from grazing bare or sandy ground;
• providing sufficient safe forage away from the soil;
• changing from grass to hay gradually;
• and reassessing rugging for each individual horse.

Tomorrow, Wonder Woman enters the auction at Stal Brouwer × Excellent Dressage Sales.

Behind this elegant filly lies a dam line that has proven its strength through generations — both in breeding and at the highest levels of sport.

Her dam, Mademoiselle Sollenburg, was bred by Adri Zekveld and comes from a family rich in proven dressage performance.

Among her close relatives is Harold S (Vivaldi), competing at Grand Prix level with Claire Darnell, as well as Lucky Man Sollenburg (Grand Galaxy Win), competing at Grand Prix level with Theo Hanzon.

The family has also produced Roald Sollenburg (Blue Hors Farrell), an NRPS-approved stallion.

With Total McLaren × Ferguson combined with this proven maternal family, Wonder Woman brings together modern dressage genetics, performance and generations of carefully developed breeding.

THE POWER OF THE DAM LINE

The stallion may catch your eye first — but the mare family shows whether quality continues through generations.

Choosing a stallion is only half of a breeding decision. To understand the strength of a pedigree, we also need to look at the mare, her mother, her grandmother and the wider female family.

A strong dam line demonstrates its value across generations through sport performance, conformation, soundness, fertility, longevity and the ability to consistently pass on quality.

Well-known examples include Vivaldi and Totilas in dressage, together with Harley VDL and Zirocco Blue VDL in showjumping. Different disciplines, but the same important lesson: look beyond the individual horse and study the family behind it.

At Maverick Stables, the complete dam line plays an important role when we select our mares and plan future breeding combinations. A strong dam line is never a guarantee, but it provides valuable evidence of what a family has repeatedly produced.

Even afwachten… of toch ingrijpen?

Een veulen dat nét niet helemaal recht op de benen staat — veel eigenaren schrikken daarvan. X-benen, O-benen of een wat scheve stand: groeit dat vanzelf bij, of moet je iets doen?

Goed nieuws: veel veulens worden niet perfect recht geboren. Door hun ligging in de baarmoeder kunnen benen wat naar binnen of buiten staan. In de eerste weken corrigeert dat vaak vanzelf, zodra het veulen sterker wordt en meer beweegt.

Maar… niet altijd.

⏳ Tijd speelt een grote rol.
Veulens groeien snel en hun groeischijven staan maar tijdelijk “open”. In die periode kun je – als dat nodig is – nog begeleiden of bijsturen. Wacht je te lang, dan is corrigeren meestal niet meer mogelijk.

🔎 Let extra op wanneer:
• de beenstand duidelijk afwijkend is
• het veulen ongelijk beweegt of belast
• je na enkele weken geen verbetering ziet

🤝 Samen kijken wat verstandig is
Bij twijfel is het slim om tijdig je hoefsmid en dierenarts mee te laten kijken. Vroeg advies vragen betekent niet meteen ingrijpen — het betekent dat je bewust kiest.

Een goede beenstand in de eerste maanden legt de basis voor een gezond sport- of recreatiepaard later.

Soms is afwachten prima.
Maar alleen als het een doordachte keuze is.

Dierenarts dag voor ons Diarado hengstveulen 🐴✨

Vandaag heeft hij zijn **SNAP Foal IgG test** en een uitgebreide veulencheck gehad bij Paardenkliniek Emmeloord en alles was gelukkig helemaal in orde 💙

Er is gekeken naar zijn hartslag, darmgeluiden, tandvlees, ogen, navel, gewrichten en natuurlijk of beide testikels aanwezig zijn ✔️
Precies zoals je het wilt zien bij een pasgeboren veulen: fit, alert en goed drinkend 🙌

De SNAP test is enorm belangrijk omdat deze meet of hij voldoende antistoffen uit de biest heeft opgenomen. Veulens worden zonder eigen afweer geboren, dus deze eerste immuniteit is essentieel voor een gezonde start.
De veulencheck helpt daarnaast om eventuele problemen vroeg op te sporen, zoals navelproblemen, gewrichtsontstekingen of andere verborgen afwijkingen.
