✨ Understanding How Our Hips Move and Work ✨

There are many ways the hips can move, and from time to time I like to use the “hula hip” exercise on one foot to help skaters better understand hip awareness.

Through this exercise, skaters can explore what it feels like to stick the hip out, tilt the pelvis, and shift weight in different directions. These sensations closely relate to movements we use while skating, yet many skaters struggle to actually feel what their body is doing.

I believe developing awareness and connection to these movements is one of the keys to better skating. Once a skater can feel and understand what is happening in their body, it becomes much easier to execute the movement intentionally on the ice. Sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t doing the movement—it’s simply learning to feel it in the first place.
