Athletix Club started its venture way back in September 2007 when it was felt that this basic sport was completely absent from the regionβs sporting community and is the only Gozitan athletics club registered with the National Athletics Association (the Malta Amateur Athletics Association). Run by a Council whose members are elected on a bi-annual basis, work with the club is all done on a volunta
ry basis. Athletix Gozo AC is fully committed towards raising the level of the sport in the Gozitan region. This is achieved by an ongoing drive to better utilize the limited available facilities, promote the sport in schools in collaboration with Physical Education Teachers, improve the athletesβ performances though an improved coaching structure and by promoting the sport of athletics as a healthy activity that can be practiced by people of all ages and from all sectors of society
The sessions will all be conducted by IAAF/MAAA qualified coaches
The mission statement of this group is aimed at:
to develop the students' physical structure
to develop the character in terms of commitment, dedication and self-confidence
to enhance the spirit of healthy competition
to provide an alternative to bad habits and bad friendships
In addition to the above, our coaches have always stressed the importance of exposing the athletes to an array of events, including the jumps (such as long/triple jump, pole vault, etc), running (including sprinting and longer runs) and the throwing events (such as discus, shot and javelin), Steeplechase and swimming. This is in line with the Athletics Development Program adopted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The participating athletes are divided into different groups, starting with young 5 year old kids and progressing to the open category older athletes. They are also given the opportunity to participate in competitions organized by the Malta Amateur Athletic Association at the Marsa Athletics Track and possibility of participating in national and foreign events
Gozitan athletes can now also get first-hand experience of how National Team athletes train. This exposure should also help athletics in Gozo to further develop in the coming years. Each year more members are seen participating in both National and International athletics events. Athletics Gozo AC also annually organizes several athletics activities, including those held during school hours, regional activities as well as in conjunctions with other major players on the mainland. Athletics Gozo AC is also proud to have amongst its ranks athletes that have been selected to participate with the Maltese Athletics National Team by the Athletic Governing body (the MAAA). The club currently uses the only athletics track in Gozo, a 200m track located at the Boys Secondary School in Gozo, and training sessions are held on Saturday from 3.00pm to 4.30pm for all athletes and on Thursdaysβ from 4.00pm to 5.30pm for athletes 12 years and up. To ensure top level coaching, the school is proud to have 3 IAAF Qualified Coaches, with one coach holding level 1 and 2 other coaches holding level 3 recognition, as well as a qualified IAAF level 2 lecturer who assists the other coaches in their coaching development. Being part of a club instigates big improvements in performance, and more importantly, provides enduring memories, experiences and companionship. The vocal and moral support from team-mates can often make all the difference to how an athlete approaches his training, especially since all athletes train for different reasons. Our club offers a βno pressureβ environment and we encourage more Gozitans to join our cause β we are after all the athletic vote of our island. Membership includes:
β’ Assistance with their coaching needs
