He understood what he needed to do in any situation. As a captain, he's the best I've ever seen in my international career. On my first overseas tour - in Australia - he just gave me unbelievable confidence. And he reads the game and analyses players so well. He has a plan for everyone.When he's batting well, he's controlling the entire game it's not the bowlers or fielders who are running the show, it's Mahela."

🫵 “In my 12 years involved with 🇱🇰🏏Sri Lanka Cricket, based on my experience, the value and impact brought by foreign coaches regarding technical matters is actually quite limited. Most of their contribution lies in player management and tactical strategy. Those things are important when it comes to winning matches.

Once players reach the national team, you cannot completely change their techniques at that stage of their careers. Those changes need to be developed from the Under-19 and Sri Lanka A team levels together with Local coaches. However, there is one thing when a player becomes successful, Local coaches often like the credit and praise for that success to go to them.”

However, progressing to the next level depends largely on the discipline of the players and the guidance of the coaches. At the same time, treating every player equally can make a huge difference as well." 💯

"I believe the period from around 2012 to 2015 was when every aspect of Sri Lankan cricket including communication and coaching was handled with great transparency. Both the players and the coaches clearly understood their responsibilities and carried them out professionally. During that time, we achieved major successes, including World Cup and Asia Cup triumphs, as well as series victories against England." 🙏❤️

"But after that period, the system and structure gradually faded away. I experienced that personally as well. When a player goes through a poor phase, the next step for him is usually the High Performance Center, where the coaches are there to help and support him. However, properly managing that entire process remains a major challenge. If those areas are handled correctly, Sri Lankan cricket can see a huge positive change."

🫵I remember very early on in my time, I traveled up to Kandy with Sanga. And we went up, and I had a problem with my ear. And he took me to a local hospital and got me sorted out, which was brilliant.

"And on the way back to the hotel, he said, "Oh, we just need to stop at this ground." And we stopped at this ground and we parked up, and there was a gentleman there with a tennis ball and a bat. And Sanga went in onto this concrete surface, and this guy was feeding him balls. And it was his dad. And his dad was just checking that his technique was all good and aligned. And then we went back to the family house up on the hill and had a cup of tea."

"And it was—wow. I mean, it was so impressive. You know, there is this guy, one of the best players in the world, and his dad's just checking the technique to make sure everything's good. But you know, it was a brilliant, simple observation for me to watch and learn and listen to."

"​But the amazing thing was, I remember being back in Sri Lanka and he referred to that innings and he wanted to watch his footwork at what time he moved his foot, his left foot, and made his trigger movement. At what point was the bowler loading up so Brett Lee loading up so he could get it synced, so that he knew what his movements were to relate to the bowler. ​And that's the fine detail that the man had, and that's why, you know, he was such a good player because he left nothing to chance." 🙏💙
