Hua Mulan: The Girl Who Fought in Her Father’s Place
The story of Hua Mulan comes from an ancient poem of Northern China, written during the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
In the era of the Wei Empire, the government ordered every family to send one man to war to defend the border. Mulan’s father was old and sick, and she had no elder brothers. So Mulan decided to dress as a man and go to fight in her father’s place.
She fought on the battlefield for twelve years. She was brave and won many battles. None of her fellow soldiers discovered she was a woman.
When the war ended, the emperor wanted to give her an important official position, but Mulan refused. She only wished to return home to her family.
Once she arrived home, she took off her armor and put on women’s clothes. Her comrades were astonished: their hero was a girl.
Hua Mulan is famous for her love for her father and her courage. She proves that women can also be great warriors.
