*European Championship U20 Women's Mountain Race*.
Shercock AC athlete Abby Smith proudly represented Ireland at the 2026 European Off Road Running Championships in Slovenia on Sunday the 7th June, competing in the U20 Women's Up & Down Mountain Race.
Despite still being an Under 18 athlete, Abby earned selection to the Irish team and lined up against some of Europe's top junior mountain runners. The challenging course covered 5.7km with 325m of ascent and descent, demanding strength, endurance and technical skill on both the climbs and descents.
Abby produced an excellent run to finish 21st out of 54 athletes, crossing the line in 32:03 minutes. She was also the second Irish athlete home, helping Ireland to a strong team performance against some of the best mountain running nations in Europe.
Competing at a European Championship while still U18 is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of Abby's hard work, commitment and talent. The experience gained racing at this level will undoubtedly stand to her as she continues her athletic journey.
Everyone at Shercock AC is incredibly proud of Abby's achievement and congratulates her on representing both her club and country with distinction.
Well done Abby
