Our Division 1 U14 girls team battled the elements to secure an excellent quarter final win away to Cill Oige in Castledaly last week.
On a very wet night, both teams gave everything in an intense tussle. Athlone led at the break thanks to a brilliantly worked goal, then built a strong second half lead. Despite a late surge from the hosts, incredible defending sealed our place in the semi final. Final Score Athlone 04-08 Cill Oige 03-08.
A huge thank you to everyone who cheered the girls on from start to finish. Your support makes such a difference!
Now we need you again. 📣
We face Loughnavalley in next week’s semi-final & we’d love to see a huge Athlone crowd on the sideline getting behind the girls.
Our Div 5 girls put in a fantastic effort in a rain-soaked Rosemount, as they narrowly missed out against Cill Óige.
Athlone responded brilliantly after conceding early, with goals from Julia Wyrzykowska and Kaci Colman & a point from Siomha Mitchell putting us four points ahead at half-time. The second half was a great battle, with further scores from Julia & Siomha keeping us in the game, but two Cill Óige goals ultimately proved decisive.
Some outstanding performances throughout, with Grace Sejdie & Darcy Ambrose excellent in defence, Tara McLoughlin and Ellen Ambrose working tirelessly & Julia & Siomha a constant threat up front.
⭐ Player of the Game: Saoirse O’Connell — outstanding from start to finish, winning countless battles & providing a huge shield in front of the defence. It’s been another brilliant year for this group, with two U14 girls teams representing the club for the second year running and giving more girls the opportunity to play, develop and compete.
This result didn’t go our way, but the effort, commitment & team spirit were something to be proud of. 🩵👏
