The Forestry Development Department brings together forestry advice, training and research in one Development Department to ensure greater cohesion and synergy betw

een the sectors. Farm forestry is an expanding and developing sector in the rural economy and needs of the sector evolve in relation to advice, training and research. There are now in excess of 310,000 hectares of private forest in the country, primarily owned by farmers. Most of these have been planted since the late 80's and therefore the owners have little experience in managing these crops.

Wildfires can cause devastation for wildlife particularly the nests of ground nesting birds, amphibians and small mammals, while grazing resources for farmers are impacted, direct payments to farmers are put at risk, and fires can spread to forestry and buildings causing even further damage.

We can all help to reduce wildfires and their impact by avoiding smoking in areas of dry grasses, ensuring campfires are put out thoroughly and, crucially, reporting wildfires immediately to the emergency response services.
