een the sectors. Farm forestry is an expanding and developing sector in the rural economy and needs of the sector evolve in relation to advice, training and research. There are now in excess of 310,000 hectares of private forest in the country, primarily owned by farmers. Most of these have been planted since the late 80's and therefore the owners have little experience in managing these crops.

It was a pleasure meeting MSc students from Linnéuniversitetet, Sweden yesterday and having the opportunity to showcase some of our forestry research activities at Teagasc as well as participating in a forest management workshop in our plots. Thanks to Nick McCarthy, Forestry lecturer, South East Technological University for setting up the visit.

Great knowledge transfer today at Applied Agroforestry Training in Co Monaghan. Thanks to Margaret and Arthur Kierans for hosting a visit to their poultry and agroforestry FT8. 2000 Free range hens utilising the system. Planted in 2020.
Thanks also to speakers Prof Jim McAdam, Kevin O'Connell, Teagasc and Cormac Ryan, DAFM. Training supported by funding provided by Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Forestry Skills Funding and to Ahabog GAA for providing an excellent venue.

The upcoming Forest Management Walks, organised by Teagasc Forestry in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will provide practical insights into key forestry management approaches to help optimise the potential of forests.

Each walk focuses on a specific forestry management theme, including reforestation, continuous cover forestry, native woodland management, agroforestry, mixed forests and recreation.

Another date for your diary. Hear about the network of ‘outdoor classrooms’ across Europe, including our own in Teagasc Oakpark. The marteloscope plots have proven to be a very useful tool in forest management training.

On 26 June, join FOREXT Fridays to hear from speakers in Ireland and North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) on how they use Marteloscopes in practice.

We will have 2 demo areas- One on Agroforestry and another on the Native Tree Area Scheme. Trees can be integrated into the farm resulting in many benefits for the environment and your pocket! 🌳🌲- Come along and chat to us on the day!
