Sea slugs… but not nudibranchs!

These tiny, fluffy-looking critters are often mistakenly referred to as nudibranchs, but they actually belong to a completely different group of sea slugs known as sap-sucking slugs. Better known as the “Shaun the Sheep” sea slug, these fascinating little animals feed by piercing algae and sucking out the contents—earning them their unusual nickname.

With their fuzzy appearance and cartoon-like features, it’s easy to see how they became one of our favorite subjects..

Which do you enjoy most, capturing the image or processing it afterward?

For many underwater photographers, editing can feel like one of the biggest challenges when starting out. Developing a workflow that feels natural and effective is an important step in bringing your creative vision to life—and during our annual Capturing Critters in Lembeh workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to sit one-on-one with Marty Snyderman and James Emery of Backscatter Photo & Video to refine your process, strengthen your editing skills, and learn how to get the very best from your images.

Think Lembeh is only about muck diving? Think again.

Beyond the famous black sands lies another side of the Lembeh Strait—one filled with vibrant coral reefs, dramatic jungle-covered cliffs, hidden bays, and secluded dive sites rarely explored by others. Circumnavigating Lembeh Island offers a full day of adventure both above and below the surface, where aquamarine lagoons and untouched coastlines give way to coral-covered pinnacles teeming with life.

These beautiful images were captured by our in-house Photo Pro, Lawrence, during a recent exploration of the reefs surrounding Lembeh—showcasing the incredible color, diversity, and beauty waiting just beyond the muck sites.

Which critter are you most excited to see on your next dive?

From the vibrant Hypselodoris tryoni nudibranch to a Saddleback Anemonefish carefully tending its eggs, this past month was packed with unforgettable encounters. And of course, no Lembeh adventure is complete without a few masters of camouflage along the way.

Have you ever joined a blackwater dive?

These unforgettable night dives offer a glimpse into the strange and fascinating world of larval-stage critters and hunting cephalopods drifting through the open ocean. One especially exciting encounter is spotting a post-larval wonderpus—still suspended in the water column before eventually settling onto the sandy bottom of the Lembeh Strait.

From sudden clouds of ink released by hunting squid to tiny creatures seeking shelter on drifting debris, every moment feels unpredictable and surreal. On blackwater dives, it always pays to look twice… you never know what might be floating past in the darkness.

What would you hope to encounter on a blackwater dive?
