Congratulations to Jac and Ifan on being selected for Swansea Valley U11s a year early, very well deserved, as they both consistently perform so well.

Everyone at the club is extremely proud. They will be in great company, joining seven players from next year’s Under 11s who were selected last week.

We are pleased to have retained 80% of last year’s coaching team. We are very fortunate to have such quality coaches committed to us and the development of our players.

We thank last seasons Team manager Jono Richards for his hard work, he has elected to step over to a role with the seconds. We are very pleased to see the excellent Paul Phillips stepping in from the under 16s.

The season may be over, but the crowds certainly aren’t slowing down. Saturday afternoon saw the lounge, hall and patio full. The football and sunshine no doubt helped but the highlight was celebrating Cled’s 90th birthday.

They say rugby clubs span generations and that couldn’t have been more evident. Toddlers played in the park while men born during World War II enjoyed the celebrations inside. Every age group in between came together, united by our community driven club, the past, present and future of Ystradgynlais RFC.

Tuesday night was another busy one, with darts taking centre stage as we hosted the Tawe & Amman Winter League Finals. Congratulations to Alex, Kev, and Arwel on winning the triples. A big thank you to all our darts and pool players for keeping the club thriving during the week.

On Friday, the Diamonds travelled to the Dulais Valley to take on the Seven Sisters Stormers. Four new debutants made their mark and loved every minute. The camaraderie in ladies’ touch rugby continues to shine, long may it last. Diolch, Blaendulais 👏💎🌩️

It was nice to see former club Captain Ethan Nichols home from Australia. Great to see him around Ystrad, hopefully catch him again before his return down under.

Our next big summer event is Tryfest, taking place on Saturday 13th June.

Organised by the Yogits, the festival will see them take to the field alongside the Diamonds, Stallions, and 17 other teams for a fantastic day of touch rugby.

After two hugely successful years, this year’s event has been reimagined to focus even more on fun and sportsmanship. It’s now a festival rather than a tournament, with each team playing six games and a Fair Play Award at the end for the most respectful side.

Join us after the rugby for live music from Jono at 7:30pm. Free entry to both the rugby and music. All welcome 💎🐎💙

On Saturday, we had the pleasure of hosting the 90th birthday celebrations of Cled Rees. It’s a true testament to the man that he can still fill a hall at 90.

Cled was a formidable back-row player for Ystrad throughout the 1950s and 60s, tough, fearless, and never one to take a step backwards. Opponents across West Wales knew not the mess with Cled.

His ability earned him selection for Breconshire and he famously played a key role in Clive Rowlands’ plan to stop Barry John in a match against Carmarthenshire. The strategy was simple, the backs would force Barry back towards the pack, where Cled was waiting to tackle him hard. It worked to perfection and Cled will forever be remembered as the man who brought down the King.

Today, Cled remains a much loved figure, regularly found in the lounge on Friday afternoons sharing stories with fellow old Blues. We’re incredibly grateful that he continues to engage with the club, once a Blue, always a Blue 💙

It’s actually his birthday today and we wish him well with the continued celebrations 🎈 Penblwydd hapus, Cled 🎂
