Great to see the club officials kitting up on Saturday.

How many other vets teams have their officials playing for them? Jono (Treasurer), Daniel (Sec) and Tristan (Chairman). Even in between games they were clearing up etc. Ratty even did a stint at the BBQ, cooking not eating 🤣

The rest of the committee also worked extremely hard. The BBQ and Can bar were very busy all day. We must also appreciate the work that went in before hand, on the grounds and the tidy up. We are very lucky to have a group of dedicated volunteers, who are committed to the club not just for the rugby season but the whole 12 months.

Paul Phillips was not the only new Stallion crowned on Saturday, Aled Davies became Stallion 72.

The Coelbren matador couldn’t wait to step in during our injury crisis on Saturday, fulfilling a life time ambition to wear Blue.

He follows in the footsteps of other great Coelbren Blues, such as Darren David, Sean Harries, Phil Harvey and Alun Richards. Even his evil twin Rhys played for our juniors.

We are very thankful for Aled stepping in during our hour need. In an interview after the game he was asked about his performance he stated:

‘When I was a boy I once found a Genie lamp near Henrhyd Falls, on a snowy day in June. He granted me three wishes
1. Coelbren to win the West Wales Cup
2. To allow me to make dance videos during a pandemic despite my bad back.
3. To wear the Blue of Ystrad.
I can now die a happy man’

Yesterday’s Stallion of the festival went to debutant Paul Phillips.

All week the question has been ‘is he still quick ?’ and for a man who is nearly 50, the answer was a resounding yes.

He finished the day as our top scorer on three and defended well, covering Jono mainly 🤣. An all round great performance.

Great to have Paul on board and back in Blue. He now becomes Stallion 71 on our legacy board.

Fair play what a shift in the heat. Big improvements on last season. Thank you boys for giving it your all today.

We scored 6 tries through Paul, Gerald, Huw and Craig Hastings (who is ahead of Jamesy in the top scorers chart this season).

It’s just nice to put a blue jersey on and have a run on the Rec again. Simple things.

In closing, did you know that in certain cultures, blue is linked to wisdom, athleticism and passion. Just saying 💙
