Wind and Rain? Surely not, it’s June! Well, whatever we’ve had, there’s more to come at the weekend!

Wow.. what a week of wind and rain this one has been! Not quite as the forecasters suggested at the start of the week regarding windspeeds or rainfall, as I think we’ve achieved a higher score on both. The windspeeds have far exceeded those that I’d seen 'previously advertised' and the flash flooding, both inland and on the coastal strip were a bit of a surprise, even if thunderstorms had been mentioned. The crescendo appears to be Saturday, as the wind speeds on Guru are currently 31kts gusting 44kts which may well out do Wednesdays and Thursday’s High wind Hang’on! Once again, the UK weather does nothing other than amaze us, from one weekend to another! Billy Short has posted pictures of a windsurf session over at Carats Café.. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10233104098333321&set=pcb.27124690060502654

It's certainly going to bring a slice of ‘gusto’ to the Duotone Demo, taking place at 'The Beach' in Littlehampton this weekend. It looks as though the Kit Demo side has been ‘slightly retracted’ for tomorrow and in-place they intend to run a Pro Rider Demonstration, which will hopefully save Nik Baker from a severely damaged Demo Fleet and promo budget! Sunday, being less windy and hopefully drier, will be the main day for peops to ‘come on down’ and try the latest Wind, Kite and Wing come Foil kit from the Duotone Camp. You might even bump into a face that has been missing from LA for many years, after being ex-communicated out to New Zealand. The infamous LA Legend, Daniel’son Arthur-Warsop, is back in Blighty, just for a visit! No info on the Beach Watersports page but Sam at WW is posting info.

If you are looking for a rig for your young ones or for yourself, we have now added reductions to our remaining rig pack stock. Nearly all the rigs have 20% off, which may not seem a lot but they are a reduced margin item, as the manufacturer, the distributor and of course us, all make very little to try and keep the cost of entering the sport, down. We have rig sizes starting at a 1.5m² Mini Kid Rig, for kids of approx. 7 years and older, plus 3.2 -3.6- 4.0m² for the growing youth and small adults. Adult sizes available in 4.6m² and 6.0m², one of which packs down into a SUP sized bag (mast is in 5 pieces). All of these rigs can be seen at.. https://www.surfladle.com/rig-packages

Keeping to the short and sweet route tonight, as I have to be away early, so here’s the Weekend’s weather (as I see it..) and the set in stone Tide times.

Saturday, will be nothing like last Saturday. Wind currently given as Southerly 25-35kt early morning, going Sou’Sou’West 27-37kt late morning and then Sou’West 31-43kt mid-afternoon and onward. Rainfall is looking to be an all-day affair but there is the possibility of an hour reprieve around midday. It’s going to be another ‘hang-on’ day though, so do check your kit over, especially if you've been giving it a hammering over the last week. Tide hits High at 15.42hrs on a 5.4m, so not the best if you can only do the afternoon.

Sunday, Sou’West 17-23hrs from 9am through to 3pm and then it drops back (slightly) to 15-21kt for the latter part of the afternoon. No rain forecast at the moment and the tide will be High at 16.30hrs on a 5.25m. Not great timing if that’s when you finish work! As for next week, it seems that this unsettled weather may well continue.

And that’s another ramble added to the pile. It’s hard to believe we are boldly going into the first weekend in June (they are rattling past!) and even harder to believe that Marcus Stuart, ex. Shoreham'ite and WW operative, now living the dream on Hayling, will be another year older tomorrow... Happy Birthday Marcus, we hope your day goes well.

Back in the morning with a dodgy beach video.

Have a great weekend everyone.. and p'p'party till you drop!

Morning! Yep, another sunny start to the weekend and once again the beach has a tranquility about it. Probably a bit too tranquil for the racing yachts, who must have seen a different wind forecast, as it's still a no wind day on Guru and the MET. The only change from yesterday evening is that the strong winds on Sunday should arrive by mid-afternoon.. perfect! The week ahead is still looking good wind wise and they do appear to be dropping the amount of rainfall back a mm or two (Monday eve into Tuesday currently looking the wettest).
So, a nice weekend ahead and hopefully something for everyone, weather wise.
As for us, it's another two days out of the sun, doing purgatory in the Megastore for our sins, so here until 5.30pm today and 10 - 4.00pm tomorrow. Have a great weekend everyone!

If everyone is now nicely cooked, shall we start the Weekend?

Ha, well, that must have been the best Bank Holiday and Half Term week for many a year. I cannot remember a week like that when I was a kid.. all I can recollect was looking out the window hoping the rain would stop! I’m sure the hot weather did not suit everyone.. and for those that struggled, the coming week may be more acceptable. I loved the heat but here comes a windy session! More on that later.

Our beach-ware stock of bodyboards, beach shoes, Junior rash vests, ponchos and SUP hardware (paddles, leashes and pumps) was severely dented during the last seven days. We are now down to our last three inflatable SUP boards (at one point we thought the pile in the shop window and storeroom would never go!) and one being a very nice Fanatic Fly Air Premium 9’8” x 32” with windsurf option, on offer at £480.00, which comes complete with a roller bag and composite shafted paddle.. a bargain, if you need one.

https://www.surfladle.com/inflatable-boards/fanatic-sup/fanatic-fly-air-premium

We also have reasonable stock of Ladies and Gents wetsuits (Ladies 50% off RRP of all suits – Gents up to 50% ) but are now missing some sizes, so we can’t promise. Nearly all of the stock is on the website and anything shown is available and at the shop (unless we have sold it and not updated the site..).

It’s sad to see but not surprising, that during this week of glorious weather, cold water shock has claimed the lives of eleven people in the UK. Perhaps they won’t be in vain and perhaps our Public Information Services will be brought into play, whenever a sudden surge in air temps are forecast at this time of year. You can hope but we will see.

You may notice new railings being installed on the beach leading into Widewater Car Park. I have been told by a very reliable source that this is down to the Port Authority, who apparently own that stretch, blocking vehicle entry onto the beach, as people have / do park on there. It’s a shame that another scheme which was suggested, i.e. relocate the left-over sea defence granite blocks along that stretch, as they would have allowed people to access that stretch of beach but block the vehicles. Not to be..

As the day has run away with itself, here’s the weekends weather and tide times.

Saturday, the wind will be doing the rounds, as Nor’East 5kt during the early morning, backing Sou’East mid-morning, Southerly by midday, then Sou’West 7-9kt during the afternoon before going West during the evening. Make what you will of that! Air temp is around 20°C and the water is now given as 15°C (top tip.. there’s a marked difference between the water temp during the morning with the tide descending compared to the evening with tide ascending, as the sun heated beach really warms the inshore water). No precipitation forecast but don’t be surprised if you do get the odd large droplet dirtying your vehicle. Tide hits High at 11.40hrs on a 5.6m, so river paddling looks to be an option, as does a barbecue, all be it slightly chilly after the last week of scorchio!

Sunday, things start to change. Proper Air flow arrives from the Sou’West and it starts to get going around mid-morning, with 14-18kts on offer. Not content, by early afternoon you can expect 17-23kts, which will be in for the duration and may pick up to 19-26kts late afternoon, so a perfect forecast for an afternoon sail, kite, foil or what have you at Shoreham. Air temp is looking to be a very cool 18°C (almost half of what it was North of tut Downs, last Sunday) but still no rain, as far as they know.. that comes next week. Tide is High at 12.16hrs on a 5.7m, so the river should be good.. for those that wish to use it.

And that’s that for the last weekend in this year’s Merry month of May. Monday we see June arrive and it’s bringing wet and windy with it… but not ‘too wet’ we hope. Have a great weekend!

The Fly Air Premium is an all-round inflatable SUP with Windsurfing option. The RNLI Mid-Summer Ball fund raising Dinner with Auction that I posted recently has unfortunately been cancelled due to a lack of ticket sales, so they are now running the auction 'online'. There are cracking prizes to be had and they may go for a steal (hopefully not too much of a steal) so please do take a looksee and bid if you can. They are uploading items constantly so do keep checking back, as the auction concludes 28th June. You will be helping the local crews (people you admire but don't want to meet when they're working... :) and station staff, so a very worthy cause indeed. All items can be found at...

Welcome to Paradise! What a start to the weekend. A slight breeze to cool the current 22C (there's going to be an exodus from inland later for that Breeze) and the beach is already alive with swimmers, yoga parties and people just enjoying Beach Life. Surprisingly, there is a swell running and a 1ft to play on.. but no takers on SUP's that I could see. Fingers staying crossed that the heat does not bring on sea fog. Rowing boats were enjoying the calm sea state and pretty sure the divers will be out, as visibility should be very good at the moment ( I did say should, in case you know different). Current wind speed is 5kt Sou'West and no change to the weekend weather from yesterday evening, so all looking good for a warm and dry weekend! We are here until 5.30pm today and then 10 till 4 Tomo and Monday. Have a great weekend, whatever you have planned.

Summertime and the living is easy! What a true statement, life feels so much better with a slice of sun and a cup of warm… fingers crossed we don’t get a sea fog bun with it. What the heck, it’s the Bank Holiday Weekend.

You can’t odds British weather, can you. A long-time 12°C cold and then wallop, in comes a weekend with a current forecast of 26°C by Monday (that’s on the coast, 31C just the other side of the Downs). That will get people moaning but not me.. unless the dreaded sea fog does its worst. Anyhow, enough of the weather, MK’s Back!

MK booms have been the locals go-to carbon boom for many years, first under the original MK Co. and then by Larry Chan, who did a sterling job with the brand. Larry decided to call 'time' last year and so MK is now under the Seasprite Sports banner, who again are a local company, so MK is still Sussex born and bred. The new 2026 CPW Wave 140-190cm and CPX Freewave 150 -210cm are now available, with the CPS Freeride160-220cm,CPS Freerace 175-225cm and CPS Slalom 190-250cm booms to follow shortly. If you are interested in a Wave or Freewave, give us a call, as although we won’t hold any stock at the shop we can still supply. Price for a Wave £499.00 and a Freewave £525.00. Still the best priced carbon boom on the market.. still from Sussex! https://www.surfladle.com/booms/mk-carbon-booms

Talking of which, Bognor..

A date for the diary.. slightly out of our area but Bognor Regis Sailing Club are holding an Open Day 6th June (which is Marcus Stewarts Birthday, in case any of you who know him have forgotten) and will be running ‘have a go’ sessions in their various sailing classes, as well as Wing Foiling. Obviously they are not going to let total newcomers loose on a foil straight off but if you are interested in getting into foiling and live near the club, it could be worth signing up, as nothing quite like having others around when you’re learning a new sport.. and they have a clubhouse!

More info at.. https://brsailingclub.co.uk/ The sea..

I am sure we have all seen that the Three Ladies lost off Brighton Beach a week or so ago, were sisters. Absolutely heartbreaking just to think of it happening and sadly it has. You can warn people as many times as you like about how our coastline might appear tranquil but the sea is always moving and if you are unlucky enough to make a mistake and get involved with it, it really has no mercy. We have no idea as to what exactly happened but it was probably the cold water that was the real culprit, as it has claimed so many lives, even of friends. So, please keep an eye out (a horrible saying) for others who really don’t know about Cold Water Shock, especially over this weekend, where the shorts and bikini clad SUP riders are likely to arrive at the beaches and have no idea that the water is still cold enough to kill. All we can hope is that Three never happens again.

So, what is the weather doing over this triple day weekend?

Saturday, the day kicks off with a light 6kt wind from the Sou’West and it will stay that way, direction wise but the strength should increase to around 11kt during the afternoon (they may be forecasting a ‘sea breeze’..). The original forecast did suggest rain showers but that appears to have ‘gone’. Tide is High at 17.40hrs on a 5.4m, so that buggers the river paddling up, unless you fancy an early evening soiree up to the pubs at Beeding. The tide hits high there approx. 1 hr later, so plenty of time for a responsible beer or cocktail, before the tide has turned.

Sunday, the early morning wind could be from the Nor’East but for the majority of the day it’s forecast as Sou’Sou'East 4kt, so a real beach day for those SUP’ers that like just sun and no wind (more worried about sea fog now..). Temps will be climbing and the UV output will I’m sure be High, so do apply the lotion if going out on the water. Tide hits High at 18.48hrs on a 5.27m. No rain, top air temp 23°C or higher.

Now the dreaded Bank Holiday Monday, renowned for bringing dastardly weather! Not so this one, as it looks to be the best one in years, if you like heat. The wind will be East 6kt during the early hours but by mid-morning it will have become Sou’East, topping out at 6-8kt by late afternoon. Air temp will be around 26°C, which is double the Sea temp, so that water is going to feel COLD! The Tide will be ‘High’ by 19.58hrs on a 5.28m.. still light now until 9pm, so river paddling can be done.

And that’s it, for the last May Bank Holiday Surfladle blog.. or ramble. We are ‘in stock’ throughout the holiday weekend, trying to get the stock cleared so that we can get out of the door. Opening times are.. 9.30 – 5.30pm Saturday and then 10am – 4.00pm Sunday and Monday. Will be good to see you if you’re around but whatever you do, do have a great Holiday weekend!

BFN.
