Coefficient of Rolling Resistance (Crr) in Track Cycling

Aerodynamic drag (CdA) dominates at racing speeds - but rolling resistance (Crr) still matters.

Crr describes the watts lost as your tyre deforms against the track surface. On indoor velodromes it's incredibly low (0.001-0.002), but on outdoor concrete or asphalt it can double - meaning tyre choice and pressure become critical.

Over longer races like the points, scratch, or madison, those small losses accumulate into fatigue and reduced performance. Even in sprints, optimising Crr can be the marginal gain that decides qualification or a personal best.

Aero gains for LA28 will not all come from new bikes.

The ABUS TimeShifter may be one of the most interesting pursuit equipment developments of the next Olympic cycle.

Developed with Swiss Side through 112 CFD simulations, 194 wind-tunnel tests and 39 velodrome measurements, ABUS has published unusually strong aerodynamic data for the helmet, including a maximum measured saving of 26.3 watts at 50 km/h against its previous GameChanger TT 1.1.

But the most interesting part for track cycling may be the consistency of the results across different riders, head positions and arm positions.

That matters in Team Pursuit, where four riders may use identical equipment but present four very different aerodynamic shapes.

With the UCI's 2027 helmet regulations creating something of a reset for the LA28 cycle, the TimeShifter looks like a helmet every serious pursuit programme will at least want to test.

The question is not whether the published numbers can simply be transferred to the track — they cannot.

The question is much simpler:

If you were responsible for finding the fastest helmet for an Olympic pursuit team, why wouldn't you test one?

Cycling Canada's decision to step away from the senior women's team pursuit was controversial.

Zolder has now made that decision look very different.

Canada's junior women's team pursuit rode 4:26.096 at the 2026 Junior Worlds. At the 2025 senior World Championships, Canada's women's team rode 4:25.054.

Different tracks and different conditions, so it is not a direct comparison. But a junior quartet sitting just 1.042 seconds from Canada's most recent senior Worlds performance, with six years still to develop before Brisbane 2032, is difficult to ignore.

And it was not just the pursuit.

Eve Buczkowski became junior points race world champion, while riders such as Sheldon Drewitt produced strong performances across the sprint programme. There were signs across the Canadian team that this may be a genuinely interesting generation rather than one isolated result.

So did Zolder prove Cycling Canada was right to prioritise 2032 over maintaining the existing senior women's TP programme?

Not yet.

But if the resource now follows the talent, the original decision may ultimately look far more logical than it did when it was announced.

The 2027 UCI track handlebar rule has created plenty of discussion, but for most riders the answer is not complicated.

The new standard is a legal 350mm outside-to-outside solution, with a compliant shape and top section.

That means:

do not rely on bar tape to make an old bar legal
do not panic if your bar says a centre-to-centre measurement smaller than 350mm under the stem clamp
do check the outside-to-outside measurement
do buy bars designed around the 2027 rule if you are racing into the next cycle
