Cranksets in Track Cycling: The Overlooked Power Link

Aerodynamics and rolling resistance often steal the spotlight, but the crankset is one of the most critical - and underestimated - parts of your track bike.

From sprint torque transfer to pursuit pacing precision, crankset design affects:

Drivetrain stiffness and efficiency

Rider fit and biomechanics

Power meter integration

Ultimately your lap speed

Our guide explores crank arm length, Q-factor, materials, and more - showing how this 'invisible engine room can deliver real performance gains.

Common Cycling Injuries - Track Cycling Guide

Track cycling pushes the body hard - and poor setup can often lead to pain or numbness.

Some of the most common issues include:

Numb hands & tingling fingers Often caused by ulnar nerve compression from too much weight on the bars.

Shoulder & scapula pain Linked to overstretching from incorrect top tube/stem length or overly wide handlebars.

Our guide explains the causes and solutions, plus setup changes that can help reduce injury risk and keep you riding pain-free.

Want to see what equipment the Australian Track Cycling Team use?

We've created a dedicated section of our website showcasing the exact equipment used by professional track cyclists at the world's biggest events.

From frames and wheels to chainrings, sprockets, and chains, much of this gear is available to purchase - so you can experience the same performance gains as the pros.

Look out for the UCI logo on product photos. This highlights equipment that is either UCI approved and homologated for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, or has already been raced by elite riders at UCI events.

Track Cycling Chains: The Hidden Performance Driver

In track cycling, every watt counts - and your chain could be the biggest hidden loss in your drivetrain.

Chains operate under extreme loads:

1800-2500W peak in sprinting

High tension across every pedal stroke

Constant articulation around small-radius cogs

If each link doesn't move smoothly, watts are wasted. For sprinters and endurance riders alike, drivetrain efficiency can decide the difference between gold and silver.

Track cycling has a television problem, but it is no longer only about what happens off air.

Hong Kong underlined something worse: even when the cameras are on, they can still miss the race. Major incidents became social clips. Huge sprint moments happened outside the version most viewers were actually given. And both women's and men's sprint continue to be treated too often like a summary package rather than the tournament disciplines they really are.

Coaching Guide: Track Cycling & the Menstrual Cycle

Elite female athletes aren't robots - performance can vary across the menstrual cycle. That's why adapting training, nutrition, and mindset strategies is key to sustaining peak form.

Our guide explores the 4 phases and their impact on training:

Menstrual (Days 1-5)

Follicular (Days 6-13)

Ovulation (Days 14-16)

Luteal (Days 17-28)

The focus: moving away from rigid calendar-based models and towards flexible, symptom-informed strategies tailored to each athlete's bio-individuality.

This coaching resource integrates physiology, nutrition, supplementation, and mindset adjustments - built for Olympic-level performance but valuable to all female track cyclists.

Coefficient of Rolling Resistance (Crr) in Track Cycling

Aerodynamic drag (CdA) dominates at racing speeds - but rolling resistance (Crr) still matters.

Crr describes the watts lost as your tyre deforms against the track surface. On indoor velodromes it's incredibly low (0.001-0.002), but on outdoor concrete or asphalt it can double - meaning tyre choice and pressure become critical.

Over longer races like the points, scratch, or madison, those 'small losses accumulate into fatigue and reduced performance. Even in sprints, optimising Crr can be the marginal gain that decides qualification or a personal best.
