We have all had it when itโ€™s check in day and the dreaded time of the month shows her ugly face and youโ€™re wearing your granny pants and a sanitary pad thatโ€™s making you walk like you have s**t yourself and already thinking those fu***ng scales are going to say heavier than last week. Then you donโ€™t want to check in because your coach is going to drop calories!

Your coach should be getting you to track your menstrual cycle in order to allow for these monthly fluctuations.

Factors that need to be taken into account when coaching females are understanding the menstrual cycle and the reasons why the scale weight may have increased.

๐ŸฉธStudies have reported an increase of approximately 0.5 kg in scale weight was during womenโ€™s menstrual cycle, this is mostly due to extracellular fluid retention.

๐Ÿฉธ The rise in scale weight is due to water retention and not an increase in your fat mass or other adiposity indices.

๐ŸฉธHormonal fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle influence our appetite, control and eating behaviour as well as carbohydrate cravings.

๐Ÿฉธ Stomach bloating due to a change in progesterone and estrogen as well as our bodies cells becoming swollen with water, causes stomach bloating.

๐ŸฉธThe menstrual cycle may affect exercise performance. Disruptions in hormonal balance throughout the menstrual cycle have been implicated in altered muscular strength, exercise endurance capacity, body temperature, metabolism and blood flow.

The last 3 years have consisted of late nights, crying to bran that I couldnโ€™t do it and I was too dumb to go to university, working full time, managing being a mum, moving house, starting 2 businesses & having a baby.

BODY COMPOSITION VS SCALE WEIGHT ๐Ÿ“ˆ

These photos are taken 14 days apart, and there is only 0.25kg difference in weight between these photos however, visually I look leaner and my measurements say I have made changeโ€™s ๐Ÿ’•

Letโ€™s talk about body composition and Scale Weight ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Body composition is what is referred to with the different percentages of muscle, fat, and bone in our bodies.

WHERE AS

Scale weight is measured at the total mass of all the different types of tissue in our bodies.

Scale weight is just a number that we get fixated on and some how has the power to make us feel s**t about ourselves and we tell ourself that if we get to a certain weight on scales then we will feel so much happier about ourselves. But the truth is for most people that when we get to this number that we have set for ourselves, Guess what ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ we still arenโ€™t happy! Then we start moving that gatepost to a lower number and the cycle continues!

WHAT THE SCALES DONโ€™T TELL YOU ARE:

โœ”๏ธHow amazing you are!!
โœ”๏ธ How much muscle mass you have
โœ”๏ธ How hard you have trained
โœ”๏ธ How you managed to run around after your children
โœ”๏ธ How you got into those jeans that didnโ€™t fit you last year

The list goes on! So when you do your check in this week, Donโ€™t let scale weight determine how you feel about yourself, what you have achieved this last week and how amazing you are. Because if changing your body composition was easy everyone would be doing it!

For those of you that are new around here, let me reintroduce myself. Iโ€™m Alice mum of 2 to a wild 8 year old and a newborn and I am the founder of Iron Ladies Fitness โค๏ธ am a personal trainer as well as an online female lifestyle coach Alice Owen Lifestyle Coaching

I have recently finished university where I have been studying Sports Science & Coaching. I am currently training towards my pre & post natal qualifications to enable me to help all of you mums out there as well, as The Womenโ€™s Body course to better guide females through their training whilst going through the menopause.

My coaching strategy is built on empowerment and education. I strongly think that knowledge is power. Thus, I make sure that my clients are knowledgeable about the science behind proper nutrition and exercise. As a busy mum myself, I am mindful that the road to fitness can be challenging, I also place a high priority on developing an inspiring and encouraging relationship with each of my clients.
My ultimate goal is to inspire women to be strong and healthy.
